Dryas of Calydon

Markx121993:

In Greek mythology, Dryas (Ancient Greek: Δρύας, gen. Δρύαντος, from δρῦς "oak") was a lord from Calydon who was also one of the famous Calydonian hunters.

Family
Dryas was a son of Ares and a brother of Tereus. But according to Hyginus' Fabulae, he was also called the son of Iapetus ("the piercer"), probably an epithet of Ares.

Mythology
In the account of the Fabulae by Hyginus, Tereus, having heard the prophecy that his son was to be killed by the hand of a relative and falsely believing that it was Dryas whom the oracle indicated, murdered the innocent man (whereas the son was actually murdered by Procne). In a joint statement, Senator Graham said, "Our goal is to change the status quo and impose crushing sanctions and other measures against Putin's Russia until he ceases and desists meddling in the US electoral process, halts cyber-attacks on US infrastructure, removes Russia from Ukraine, and ceases efforts to create chaos in Syria. The sanctions and other measures contained in this bill are the most hard-hitting ever imposed – and a direct result of Putin's continued desire to undermine American democracy. I strongly believe that DNI Coats' assessment – that the warning lights are blinking red when it comes to Russian meddling in the 2018 election – is accurate. These sanctions and other measures are designed to respond in the strongest possible fashion."[

On August 8, the Russian business-oriented newspaper Kommersant published the full draft text of the bill . This caused the ruble to fall 2.2%.

Provisions in the draft bill include:

*A ban on some of Russia's largest state banks
*Sanctions on investment in Russian government or affiliated oil and gas companies
*Sanctions on Russian individuals suspected of cyber attacks against the United States
*A new Sanctions Office to fortify the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act

Brazil Surpasses 2020 Target to Cut Deforestation Emissions

Brazil Surpasses 2020 Target to Cut Deforestation Emissions Brazil cut its greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation in 2017 to levels below its internationally agreed 2020 climate change targets, the country's Environment Ministry said Thursday. Brazil reduced its emission from deforestation in the Amazon rainforest by 610 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), compared to its 2020 target of 564 million tons. In the Cerrado savanna, emissions were reduced 170 million tons of carbon dioxide versus a target of 104 million tons. The Amazon, the world's largest tropical rainforest, and the Cerrado, South America's biggest savanna, soak up vast amounts of carbon dioxide, and their preservation is seen as vital to the fight against climate change.  But destruction of the forest releases large quantities of CO2, one of the main greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming. Large-scale Amazon deforestation has made Brazil one of the world's top greenhouse gas emitters, because of fires and the spread of agriculture and cattle ranching. The 2020 emission goals were set out in the 2009 Copenhagen Accord to combat climate change. Under the more ambitious Paris Agreement in 2015 on climate change, Brazil has set goals for further steep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions for 2025 and 2030. "The policy message is that we can and should remain in the Paris Agreement (because) it is possible to effectively implement the commitments that have been made," said Thiago Mendes, secretary of climate change in the Environment Ministry.

Matiras: from es.wikipedia https://ift.tt/2KBJaTu

Miguel Ángel Campano Mendaza (Madrid, February 11, 1948-Cercedilla, August 5, 2018) was a renowned painter who was critically acclaimed as part of the "generation of the renewal of Spanish painting", awarded, among other prizes, the National Prize for Plastic Arts in 1996.

Biography
He was the third of five brother, son of General Ángel Campano López. He studied Fine Arts in Valencia and Architecture in Madrid. He began his artistic career in 1969, making his first individual exhibition in Bilbao. In 1971 he exhibited in different Spanish towns -Pamplona, Santander and Valencia- and that same year he met the abstract painter Fernando Zóbel, one of the promoters of the so-called Cuenca Group and founder of the Spanish Museum of Abstract Art. He continued to exhibit in Madrid and Seville and befriended the painter José Guerrero, who is said to be a fundamental influence in Campano. In 1976 he moved to Paris,8 a city that became, together with Sóller in Mallorca, the artist's habitual residence. His stay in France allowed him to get to know the work of painters who have inspired his work at different times, such as Cezanne and Delacroix, among many others. In the 1980s he participated in the great collective exhibitions of the time of young Spanish artists -Miquel Barceló, José Manuel Broto or José María Sicilia- in Spain, France and the United States, as well as in individual exhibitions throughout Spain -from Navarre to Granada-, France -Nimes and Paris- or in Brussels (Belgium).

The whole of his work has been considered a place of experimentation and transgression. It has been linked to automatism in its beginnings, to geometric abstraction and informalism. The reinterpretation in several series of French paintings by Cezanne and Poussin, among others, as well as cubism, stands out from his production. His stay in 1994, 1995 and 1996 in India resulted in an innovative interest in colour in his later work 11 and he has continued to work despite having suffered a serious stroke and subsequent health complications in 1996. The two most outstanding exhibitions of his work have been those held in Valencia by the IVAM at the Centre del Carmen in 1990-1991 and the one held at the Palacio de Velázquez in Madrid between June and September 1999.

In 1996, he was awarded the National Prize for Plastic Arts in Spain for "his decisive contribution to the debate on the new Spanish painting" and the "rigor and courage with which he has developed a work in which he combines construction and expressiveness in an exemplary manner". Campano works can be found in museums such as the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, the Abstract Art Museum in Cuenca, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the ARTIUM Centre-Basque Museum of Contemporary Art, the Valencian Institute of Modern Art, the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Hastings Foundation collection in New York.

The case Vermont vs Hunt (1982) had two major outcomes. One was a ruling by the Vermont Supreme Court that side judges had the right to vote on plea agreements. The second was a lengthy review of judges conduct used to reach this conclusion. This resulted in a Judicial Conduct Board bringing 24 formal charges against three Supreme Court judges.

Background
The state accused Hunt of murdering a neighbor in 1982. His attorney attempted to plea bargain a minimum of ten years. The Vermont Superior Court Judge, James L. Morse, accepted the plea. Both side judges, including Jane Wheel, disagreed. They brought their objections to the Vermont Supreme Court and, in 1984, obtained a ruling in favor of the side judges plea.

Judicial conduct
Wheel was president of the professional society, Association of Side Judges. She was determined to win her initial appeal to the Supreme Court. She was mistress to two judges, William C. Hill and Thomas L. Hayes. She threatened Vermont Attorney General John J. Easton Jr. with undermining his support for his candidacy for governor.

Assistant Attorney General Brian L. Burgess punctured a hole in the wall, in order to eavesdrop on a conversation between Vermont Attorney General Jeffrey Amestoy and Hill, when Wheel was being investigated. Hill, a sitting Supreme Court judge, was attempting to influence Amestoy.

At one point during appeal, all five court members were forced to step aside, and have their positions filled by temporary judges. The New York Times called the high court, a "rump court."

In 1986 and 1987, Hill and two other justices, Hill, Ernest W. Gibson III, and Hayes, were accused of tailoring decisions to suit Wheel, and helping her cover up pay padding. Wheel was accused of wielding undue influence over the justices. Hayes died before the charges could be resolved, and charges against Gibson were dropped. Wheel was convicted on charges arising from the case. Hill was found to have violated rules regarding judicial conduct, and opted to retire at the end of his second six-year term, rather than applying to remain on the court until age 70, Vermont's mandatory retirement age for judges. His former colleagues banned him from serving as a judge again.

The Alsace single territorial collectivity referendum () was a referendum held on Sunday, 7 April 2013 in Alsace, France, which aimed at the creation of the single territorial collectivity of Alsace through the merging of the regional council of Alsace and the departmental councils of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin. Even though there was a 57.65% majority of "Yes" votes, the project was not approved: indeed, the "Yes" side needed to win in both departments (and at least 50% overall) with at least a 25% share of the vote from eligible voters ( votes in Bas-Rhin and votes in Haut-Rhin). The project was rejected by a 55.74% of the voters in Haut-Rhin, whereas the "Yes" side won only a 22.90% share from eligible voters in Bas-Rhin.

Ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase complex assembly factor 3 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the UQCC3 gene. Located in mitochondria, this protein is involved in the assembly of mitochondrial Complex III, stabilizing supercomplexes containing Complex III. Mutations in the UQCC3 gene cause Complex III deficiency with symptoms of hypoglycemia, hypotonia, lactic acidosis, and developmental delays. This protein plays an important role as an antiviral factor, bolstering the ability of cells to inhibit viral replication, independent of interferon production. The UQCC3 protein can be cleaved by OMA1 metalloprotease during mitochondrial depolarization, targeting the cell for apoptosis. Depletion of this protein alters cardiolipin composition, causing cellular and mitochondrial defects.

Structure
The UQCC3 gene is located on the q arm of chromosome 11 in position 12.3 and spans 2,036 base pairs. The gene produces a 10.1 kDa protein composed of 93 amino acids. This protein faces the intermembrane space. It possesses an N-terminal signal peptide and a signal transmembrane structure, in addition to several phosphorylation sites. The secondary structure of this protein is made up mostly of random coils and alpha helices. Alpha helices 2 and 3 bind to cardiolipin.

Function
The UQCC3 gene encodes a protein that functions in complex III assembly, downstream of assembly factors UQCC1 and UQCC2. This is evidenced by the observation that UQCC3 levels are reduced in cells with decreased levels of UQCC1 and UQCC2, but lack of the UQCC3 protein does not affect levels of UQCC1 and UQCC2. Predicted to be a secretary protein with small molecular weight, this protein has important functions in cellular proliferation and antiviral innate immune regulation. Expression of this protein is ubiquitous in carcinomas, along with normal tissues. During the early stages of Complex III assembly, the UQCC3 protein stabilizes supercomplexes containing Complex III, most notably the III2/IV supercomplex.

Clinical Significance
In the sole recorded case of a mutation in the UQCC3 gene, a patient with a homozygous missense mutation presented with nuclear type 9 complex III deficiency, displaying symptoms of hypoglycemia, hypotonia, lactic acidosis, severe delayed psychomotor development, and other developmental delay. The patient also had decreased levels of cytochrome b within Complex III.

The UQCC3 protein also has a role as an antiviral factor, independent of interferon production. Levels of this protein increase in response to a viral infection, improving the ability of cells to inhibit viral replication. Overexpression of the UQCC3 gene increases transcription of OAS3 while knockdown of RNase L or OAS3 hampers the antiviral effect of UQCC3. Signaling from UQCC3 to the OAS-RNase L system is independent of interferon production. This protein is also regulated by expression of the double-stranded RNA-dependent protein kinase EIF2AK2.

Depleted levels of the UQCC3 protein cause impaired respiration and subtle yet significant alterations in cardiolipin composition, which then result in abnormal crista morphology, increased sensitivity to apoptosis, and decreased levels of ATP. Furthermore, mitochondrial depolarization causes OMA1 metalloprotease to cleave the UQCC3 protein; effectively, this mechanism targets cells with damaged mitochondria for apoptosis.

Interactions
This protein associates with the rest of mitochondrial Complex III and has protein-protein interactions with PHLDA3.
