US Rakes China for 'Nonsense' About Airline Websites The White House on Saturday sharply criticized China's efforts to force foreign airlines to change how they refer to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, labeling China's latest effort to police language describing the politically sensitive territories as "Orwellian nonsense." Amid an escalating fight over China's trade surplus with the United States, the White House said China's Civil Aviation Administration sent a letter to 36 foreign air carriers, including a number of U.S. carriers, demanding changes. The carriers were told to remove references on their websites or in other material that suggests Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau are part of countries independent from China, U.S. and airline officials said. The White House said in a statement that President Donald Trump "will stand up for Americans resisting efforts by the Chinese Communist Party to impose Chinese political correctness on American companies and citizens." "This is Orwellian nonsense and part of a growing trend by the Chinese Communist Party to impose its political views on American citizens and private companies. ... We call on China to stop threatening and coercing American carriers and citizens," the statement said. Taiwan is China's most sensitive territorial issue. Beijing considers the self-ruled, democratic island a wayward province. Hong Kong and Macau are former European colonies that are now part of China but run largely autonomously. Trade friction The White House's sharp criticism followed contentious trade talks between senior U.S. and Chinese officials this week. The Trump administration demanded a $200 billion cut in China's trade surplus with the United States by 2020, sharply lower tariffs and a halt to subsidies for advanced technology, people familiar with the talks said. "My group just got back from China. We're going to have to rework China because that's been a one-way street for decades," Trump said Saturday at an event in Cleveland. "We can't go on that way," he said, although he also said he has a lot respect for Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump earlier this week praised his relationship with Xi, but there were no signs of significant progress at the talks on Thursday and Friday, raising fears of a trade war between the world's two largest economies. Trump has already proposed tariffs on $50 billion of Chinese goods, which could go into effect next month. China has said its own retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, including soybeans and aircraft, will go into effect if the U.S. duties are imposed. It has also requested that Washington treat Chinese investment equally under national security reviews and stop issuing new restrictions on Chinese investment. Airlines' 'next steps' A spokesman for Airlines for America, a trade group representing United Airlines, American Airlines and other major carriers, said Saturday that it was working with the U.S. government to determine "next steps" in the dispute about how airlines should refer to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. In January, Delta Air Lines, following a demand from China over listing Taiwan and Tibet as countries on its website, apologized for making "an inadvertent error with no business or political intention," and said it had taken steps to resolve the issue. Also in January, China suspended Marriott International Inc.'s Chinese website for a week to punish the world's biggest hotel chain for listing Tibet, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as separate countries in a customer questionnaire. The apparent intensification of efforts to police how foreign businesses refer to Chinese-claimed territories — even if only in pull-down web menus — underscores how sensitive the issue of sovereignty has become in China. China's aviation authority said in January that it would require all foreign airlines operating routes to China to conduct comprehensive investigations of their websites, apps and customer-related information and "strictly comply with China's laws and regulations to prevent a similar thing from happening." Australia's Qantas Airways said in January that it had amended its website to no longer refer to Taiwan and Hong Kong as countries rather than Chinese territories after China issued a similar warning.

A Look at Career of Rudy Giuliani As U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York in the 1980s, Rudy Giuliani earned a reputation as a tough prosecutor in going after white-collar crime and members of the American mafia. Today, Giuliani finds himself in an opposite role, a member of President Donald Trump's legal team as special counsel Robert Mueller investigates Russia's alleged involvement in the 2016 presidential campaign. The former New York mayor was an informal adviser to Trump's presidential campaign, and he was a frequent spokesman. Giuliani was the first person to be mentioned by Trump in the latter's election acceptance speech. "He's unbelievable," Trump said. "He's traveled with us and he went through meetings, and Rudy never changes." Giuliani, an attorney, was considered for secretary of state in Trump's administration and often was mentioned as a possible attorney general. Giuliani's past legal and consulting work, which raised concerns about his overseas business relationships, thwarted his efforts to become America's top diplomat. Giuliani and Trump have known each other for decades and share an aggressive rhetorical style and similar policy beliefs — including support for law enforcement in ways that have marginalized minorities, and adopting forceful positions on immigration enforcement. In the early 1990s, Giuliani became the first Republican elected mayor of New York City in two decades. Giuliani served two terms as mayor and during his tenure, which ended in 2001, crime in the city fell significantly. Later, he became known as "America's Mayor" for his efforts to unite the city following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, which destroyed the World Trade Center towers. Giuliani's political ambitions included running for the U.S. Senate seat that was vacated by then retiring four-term Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynihan. After medical, marital and other personal issues, Giuliani withdrew from the race in 2000. In 2002, the former mayor founded Giuliani Partners, a security consulting firm that had Qatar's Ministry of the Interior on its roster of clients. The contracts with the ministry were managed by Minister Abdullah bin Khalifah Al Thani, a member of Qatar's royal family. Abdullah bin Khalifah Al Thani was said to have hosted Osama bin Laden on two visits to the royal family member's farm, a charge that was repeated in a 2007 Congressional Research Service study. In 2016, Giuliani began working for the influential law firm Greenberg Traurig, where he led the firm's global cybersecurity and crisis management team, and served as a senior adviser to executive chairman Richard Rosenbaum. Rosenbaum announced in April that Giuliani would take a leave of absence "to handle matters unrelated to the law firm or its clients." Giuliani's work with the firm involved the Turkish government and a Turkish-Iranian businessman who was convicted in connection with a scheme to help Iran evade U.S. sanctions. Giuliani is a one-time presidential hopeful who sought the Republican candidacy for the White House in 2008, but lost the nomination to Arizona Senator John McCain. Giuliani has been married three times and reports say his current wife, Judith Nathan, filed for divorce in April. The couple have been married for 15 years. Giuliani is a Brooklyn, New York, native. He turns 74 later this month.

In World War II, Navajo soldiers used their language to transmit messages that could not be understood by the enemy; and in World War I, Choctaw soldiers used languages to communicate secret messages by telephone. More than 10,000 American Indians served during the Korean War. More than 42,000 American Indians served during the Vietnam era, between 1965 and 1975. 3,000 served in the Gulf War. As of 2017, there were more than 31,000 American Indian and Alaska Native men and women on active duty in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. Native Americans serve at a higher rate per capita than any other ethnic group in the U.S., and this begs the question of why they would put their lives on the line for a government that historically oppressed them, consigned them to reservations and forced them to assimilate into the dominant white culture. Douglas Good Feather said the answer is rooted in spiritually and culturally significant warrior traditions. He is the executive director of the Lakota Way Healing Center in Mead, Colorado. It is a nonprofit group that draws on Lakota spirituality to help people heal from trauma and addiction. An Army veteran, he served two tours in Iraq. "In the old days, we had rites of passage," he said. "They basically taught you there were different steps in your life and you changed with time. Rites of passage helped you from one age to the next. They gave you identity and helped you understand the next stage of your life. One of those rites of passage was to be accepted into the warrior societies. "We don't have the old ways anymore," he continued. "So many of us go into the military to fulfill that rite of passage." More importantly, he stressed that Native Americans are patriotic. "This is our country. Our blood comes from here and no place else. We join the military because we love this country, so we're going to defend it for our children." Revered status Oklahoma native Harvey Pratt, Cheyenne/Arapaho, is among the five artists whose designs for the Native Veterans memorial are under consideration. "I served in Vietnam in the Marine Corps with the third Marine recon unit [Reconnaissance Battalion]," he said. "I grew up with people who knew all the old ways and what we did with warriors." One of those relatives was his aunt, Laura Birdwoman, born in Oklahoma around 1880. "I had three older sisters, and once they went to Aunt Laura and asked, 'Why do you treat the boys better than us?' "And Aunt Laura told my sisters, 'Those boys are going to have to die for you some day. They're going to have to defend you in battle.'" In point of fact, in many tribes, women served as warriors in the past, and today, Native American women enlist in greater numbers than Native American men. In Native communities today, warrior status is as revered as it was in history; every pow wow opens with a grand parade led by veterans carrying the U.S. flag to honor tribe members who have fought for their country, and memorials to veterans stand in many reservations today. Activists, Academics Urge Trump Not to Trade Human Rights for Denuclearization in North Korea As preparations are being made for the U.S. president and North Korea's leader to hold an historic summit, activists and academics are urging Donald Trump not to sacrifice human rights to achieve denuclearization. "To date, attention had been paid to the threat against peace, such as nuclear testing and missile launches by the North Koreans, but we must not forget the abduction issue, where peoples' lives are under threat," said Koichiro Iizuka, a Japanese citizen whose mother was taken to North Korea when he was a baby. "It cannot be that the weight of human life is less heavy than nuclear weapons and missiles," he told a U.N. meeting Thursday on the abduction issue. "In the context of the U.S.-North Korea upcoming summit, it is important that the U.S. raise the issue of abduction and entice actual action from North Korea," said Katsunobu Kato, Japan's minister in charge of the abduction issue. Japan says 17 of its citizens have been abducted by North Korea and counts some 800 cases where the possibility of abduction by Pyongyang cannot be ruled out. Abductions are a sensitive and important political issue in Japan. "This is an extremely urgent issue that needs to be resolved," Kato said. Decades of pain The abduction issue has haunted some Japanese families for decades. Koichiro Iizuka was only one-year-old when his mother was abducted in 1978 by North Korean agents. "I am without any memories of my mother," the now 41-year old said. At a summit between the leaders of North Korea and Japan in 2002, his family first received information on his mother. The North Koreans said she had died in a traffic accident. "There are no words to describe how I felt back then, the only thing I can say is that endlessly tears dropped from my eyes," Iizuka told the meeting. But Iizuka says further investigation found that the death certificate was a fake and there was no information to confirm his mother's death. "She is still alive in North Korea; she is still waiting there to be saved," he said. For Takuya Yokota, the 1977 abduction of his then 13-year old sister on her way home from school continues to cause his family heartache. "My parents spent more than 20 years without knowing what had happened to her," Yokota said. His family was told by Pyongyang officials in 2002 that his sister was dead that she had committed suicide. Remains were returned, but subsequent DNA testing proved they were not his sister. "After all these decades of suffering and distress that North Korea imposed on us, they piled further despair on us," Yokota said. "The issue of North Korea is not only nuclear development and missiles, but the abduction matter must not be forgotten." "The near total absence of human rights concerns from the agenda of the inter-Korean summit meeting was a missed opportunity," Junya Nishino, a professor at Tokyo's Keio University said of last month's historic meeting between the leaders of North and South Korea. "It is imperative that human rights are not sidelined in any talks," he added. U.S. detainees North Korea is also holding three U.S. citizens, who the Trump administration has indicated could be released imminently. But another detainee, American student Otto Warmbier, was not so fortunate. The 21-year old was arrested in North Korea in January 2016 for stealing a propaganda poster and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He died in June 2017, days after he was released and returned to the U.S. with severe brain damage. "First, we were silenced by North Korea, we were afraid to say anything," Otto's father Fred Warmbier recounted. "We lived in fear, and fear of what they would do to our son. So they used him as political pawn for as long as they could. When he was of no value to them, they essentially sent him home to our family in a body bag." The Warmbiers filed a lawsuit last week in a U.S. district court seeking compensation for their son's death. Warmbier said the suit seeks to construct a narrative of the events that occurred while Otto was detained. "We are trying to build a pathway that leads directly to [leader] Kim [Jong Un] and his regime to force them to be answerable for their actions," he said. Cautious negotiations North Korea experts are urging the Trump administration to tread carefully at the expected summit. "We should not be optimistic about recent developments and also should keep a cautious eye on the North Korean leader's words and behaviors," said Professor Nishino of Keio University. "The North Korean leader has expressed his willingness to achieve a nuclear-free Korean peninsula, but any specific measures for denuclearization of North Korea were not mentioned in the Panmunjeom declaration last month," he noted. He said that at the U.S.-North Korea summit the leaders must deliver a detailed agreement on how North Korea will denuclearize. Jonathan Pollard of the Washington-based Brookings Institution wonders why this outreach from Kim now and what is he seeking. "He sees this as time to chip away at the coalition that has been arrayed against North Korea," Pollard said. "To erode America's alliances to the Republic of Korea and Japan, and to push through a door that the progressive president of the Republic of Korea, President Moon, has opened for him." Pollard points out that so far all Kim has offered the international community are gestures, ones that have little or no cost for him, such as halting nuclear and long-range missile tests. He says President Trump must be ready to disabuse Kim of the notion that nuclear weapons guarantee his regime's survival. "A murderous tyrant may don the clock of compliance, a sunny disposition, and dupe the world, but he is still a murderous tyrant," said Sung-Yoon Lee, of Tufts University's Fletcher School. "We have to keep up the pressure on North Korea, and remind the world of the basic nature of the North Korean regime cruel purveyors of inhumanity."

The so-called '''Wall of Haseki''' () was a [[city wall]] built around [[Athens]] by its [[Ottoman Empire|Ottoman]] governor, [[Hadji Ali Haseki]], in 1778. Initially intended to protect the city from attacks by [[Turco-Albanian]] warbands, it became an instrument of Haseki's tyrannical rule over the city.

==History==
[[Turco-Albanian]]s had been brought in by the [[Sublime Porte|Porte]] to suppress the [[Orlov Revolt]] in the [[Morea]] in 1770, and remained a menace to southern Greece. for many years thereafter. In In 1778, such a warband arrived in [[Attica]], and sent emissaries to the Athenians, threatening to burn the city unless they received provisions and an official document hiring them as guards of the city. The Ottoman governor, [[Hadji Ali Haseki]], and the Athenian populace, both Christian and Muslim, resolved to meet the Albanians in the field, as the city was unprotected by wall. In a battle that took place near [[Halandri]], the Athenians defeated the Albanians. To secure the city against another attack, Haseki immediately began construction of a new [[city wall]]. Work had not progressed far when a second and far larger force of 6,000 Albanians approached, under a certain Maksut, on their way to the Morea. The Turks then abandoned the city and found refuge in the [[Acropolis of Athens]], while Haseki allowed the Greeks to move to [[Salamis Island]] for safety. There they remained for 13 days, until the Albanians departed, after receiving a substantial sum as a bribe. Construction on the wall resumed with increased vigour: Haseki not only enlisted the entire population of the city without distinction, but himself participated in the work, so that the 10 km long wall was completed in 108 days, or, according to other reports, in only 70 days. Many ancient and medieval monuments were demolished and reused as building material in the process. Haseki then promptly presented the Athenians with a bill for 42,500 piastres, ostensibly for the supervisors he had brought from outside. Not only that, but he placed guards at the gates, so that the wall served to virtually imprison the population in their own city.

==Description==
The hastiness of the construction, however, resulted in a wall only about high and less than thick, rather than a proper fortification. The course of the wall was as follows: from the [[Odeon of Herodes Atticus]] at the foot of the Acropolis, it went to the [[Theatre of Dionysus]], and thence to the [[Arch of Hadrian (Athens)|Arch of Hadrian]], whose lower portion was walled up. From there it followed the course of the modern [[Vasilissis Amalias Avenue]] to [[Syntagma Square]], thence down [[Stadiou Street]] to the original headquarters of the [[National Bank of Greece]]. From there it turned west to [[Koumoundourou Square]], passed in front of the [[Theseion]], over the [[Areopagus]], and arrived again at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. The Lancashire Old Ball custom differs from other animal head traditions in Britain by being associated with Easter; most of the others were instead carried out at [[Christmas]] time. Demonstrating potential links to other regional traditions is the use of the name "Ball" for hobby horses in other areas. The only way we're going to overcome this is by reducing emissions." Brown accused Trump of wanting people to buy more gasoline and create more pollution. In 2012, former president Barack Obama ordered emission standards to be raised to about 21 kilometers per liter of gasoline by 2025. The goal was to cut pollution and make cars and small trucks more energy efficient. The EPA is seeking to freeze fuel efficiency requirements at 2020 levels until 2026. EPA chief Scott Pruitt said last month that Obama's decision was politically based and the emission standards Obama set were too high and did not "comport with reality." Pruitt said his EPA will set fresh standards so new cars that use less gas and are safer than older models will be affordable. A huge part of Project Infinite Greens program is the final project at the end of each program year. These Final projects are called Green Business Plans, where students apply the knowledge that they learned since the beginning of the year to accomplish a goal. During this portion of the program students receive all the support that they need in order to succeed.

Each group (1-5 students) is given a work station with resource materials for data, mentors to assist in the direction/ understanding of the groups focus and a neutral environment to help develop the research process.

Upon completion of that Program year Project infinite green students are able to present their Green Business Plans to help further the development and to push for the students to continue on with it. Once the students have reached the upper high school levels they are pushed to pursue a multi year project that is considered their Business Plan for that program year. At this point these students working on the Extended business plans will also work as mentors for the programs newer students.

In fall of 2011 Project infinite Green accepted its first 19 students from middle schools in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. After hearing from numerous guest speakers and having some on site experiences, these students where tasked with creating a Green Business plan that they would later present to [[United States Congress|Congress]] in Washington D.C.

The 2012 - 2013 program year was structured very similarly to that of the previous program year, but with a focus placed on fuel efficiency. The Scottish adventurer and fabulist [[Gregor Macgregor]] promoted a settlement in Honduras that he called Poyais. In 1823 he chartered vessels to take settlers to the settlement. Four vessels actually carried settlers or supplies for the scheme:

* - first vessel to bring settlers
* - second vessel to bring settlers
* - third vessel to bring settlers, but diverted to Belize on discovering that the previous settlers had abandoned their encampment
* - fourth vessel, but this one brought arms and supplies; diverted to Belize

Reports also exist that five vessels set out for Poyais but that when word reached Scotland the Poyais had no foundation in reality the British [[Royal Navy]] intercepted them and turned them back.

Lastly, ''John'', Pettrie, master, was wrecked on the Viceosa Reef, in the Black River, on 20 May 1825. Her crew survived and reached Truxillo in her boats. "I'm optimistic," he said, after weeks of heavy rain relieved a long period of drought in the North African country. Algeria, a member of Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, has long neglected its farmers and focused on its oil and gas industry, which generates about 60 percent of state revenues. But a crash in oil prices from above $100 a barrel in 2014 to below $30 in 2016 left the nation struggling to fund its $50 billion annual import bill and has prompted the government to look for ways to ease the strain on its coffers. Emphasis on local production With 20 percent of the import bill going toward food, the government has launched a drive to increase local production, seeking to encourage farmers with incentives such as low-interest loans and free vaccinations for livestock. It is also expanding the use of irrigation to cover 2 million hectares in 2019 (7,720 square miles) from 1.3 million hectares now (5,020 square miles), officials say, helping farmers who rely on rains that can fail. The government is building 15 new dams to add to the 80 existing ones to water cereals covering an area of 600,000 hectares (2,315 square miles), up from just 60,000 hectares now. "Now Algeria is offering the agricultural sector with great support, with huge funds to help the production and to provide food for all Algerians," said Mohamed Djahed, head of the parliamentary agriculture committee. The government wants to boost output of wheat — one of the main items on the food import bill — to 5.3 million tons by 2022 from 3.5 million tons in 2017. Algeria, one of the world's biggest wheat importers, is expected to consume 10.55 million tons of the grain in the 2018-19 season, the U.S. Foreign Agricultural Service said. Algeria also wants to double output for other products such as potatoes, milk and meat over four years. In addition to promoting Algerian production, the government has drawn up a list of 851 items that it now bans from being imported, including some food products. Bureaucracy's effects But government initiatives are taking time to feed through. Official figures show the overall value of food imports fell by just 0.2 percent in the first quarter of 2018 compared with a year earlier, while the value of cereal and milk imports rose. "Algeria has all the tools needed to promote production," said an economics professor at the University of Algiers, asking not to be identified. "But, as usual, the implementation will take time because of bureaucracy." Nevertheless, farmers are responding to the government push. Mohamed Amine Abid, who breeds dairy cattle, has increased his herd to 70 cows from 40 since starting up in 2013, helped by state aid that included an extra piece of land. Russia has flexed its military muscles during the last few years with its 2014 annexation of Ukraine's Crimea and deep involvement in the Syrian conflict serving as examples of its more belligerent stance. But while global military spending rose 1 percent to $1.739 billion last year, Russia's fell 20 percent in real terms to $66.3 billion, the report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute showed. It was the first fall since 1998, a year of a major crisis when Russia's economy collapsed and it defaulted on domestic debt. The following year Vladimir Putin took power as prime minister and, on New Year's Eve, president. Based on the government's spending plan until 2020, defense costs are expected to stay flat from 2017 or possibly even fall somewhat adjusted for inflation, said Siemon Wezeman, senior researcher in the SIPRI Arms and Military Expenditure Program. "Very clearly that has a direct impact on procurement and on operations. Those are the quickest things to cut," Wezeman told Reuters. In fourth place Russia dropped to fourth place in the ranking of the world's biggest military spenders, overtaken by Saudi Arabia. "Russia definitely has a very clear feeling it has to show that it is still a major power, and you show that by undertaking operations, in for example, Syria, by showing up on the Atlantic Ocean with your navy," Wezeman said. "But I am sure that there will be serious cost cuts to those." Russia's finances are still fragile following a two-year economic downturn brought on by Western sanctions and a collapse in global oil prices. Higher crude prices helped the economy return to growth of 1.5 percent last year, short of a government target of 2 percent. The export-dependent economy has now got accustomed to lower commodity prices than before 2014, and the budget is likely to post a small deficit or even a surplus in 2018. Putin has also called for higher living standards and higher spending on social infrastructure, such as health care and education. Some government officials have called for lower military spending to free up funds for such initiatives. The Kremlin said in March that Russia would cut its military budget to less than 3 percent of gross domestic product within the next five years. The United States remains the world's biggest military spender by far, accounting for 35 percent of global expenditures, more than the next seven highest-spending countries combined. Its military budget was unchanged in 2016 and 2017 but a significant rise is expected this year. China's spending as a share of world military expenditure rose to 13 percent last year from 5.8 percent in 2008.
