Nathalie (or Natalie) Fitzjames (or Fitz-James) was a ballerina who was especially admired in Naples. She danced the 'peasant pas de deux' in Act 1 of the premiere of Giselle with Auguste Mabille at the Paris Opéra in 1841. She starred in La reine de Chypre, at the Salle Le Peletier of the Paris Opéra on 22 December 1841, and afterwards toured in Italy.

In autumn 1850 Fitzjames travelled to New York, where she made her debut in Paquita at the Astor Place Opera House as part of Max Maretzek's opera company. Her part was staged for her by Lucien Petipa. American audiences are reported to have found her too thin for their taste.

Fitzjames was a believer in modernising women's dress. In the spring of 1851, she danced with a so-called "Bloomer Troupe" in Brooklyn, sporting the recently invented and controversial bloomer costume.

Michel Jacques Louis Baranger (31 July 1927, Le Mans – 1 October 2014, Tucson, Arizona) was a Franco-American theoretical physicist.

Baranger matriculated in 1945 at the École normale supérieure, Paris, graduating there in 1949. In 1951 he received from Cornell University his PhD under Hans Bethe with dissertation Relativistic Corrections to the Lamb shift. (Bethe, L. M. Brown, and John R. Stehn had previously calculated a non-relavistic estimate of the Lamb shift.) At Cornell University and then at Caltech from 1953 to 1955, he was also an assistant to Richard Feynman. In 1955 Baranger joined the physics department of Carnegie Institute of Technology, where he became an assistant professor in 1956 and a full professor in 1964. In 1969 he became a professor at MIT, where he retired as professor emeritus in 1997. After retirement from MIT, he worked at the New England Complex Systems Institute and was an adjunct professor at the University of Arizona, Tucson.

In 1961/62 he was Senior Fellow of the National Science Foundation at the Sorbonne.

He was a US citizen. He was a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

Upon his death he was survived by two sons, a daughter, four grandchildren, and three former wives: Elizabeth Urey Baranger (born 1927, a physicist and eldest child of Harold Urey), Anne Gerard and Mary Lee Baranger.

Sudanese Tea Seller Supports Protesters with Free Food, Drinks

Sudanese Tea Seller Supports Protesters with Free Food, Drinks Protesters in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, have been holding a sit-in since April 6, demanding the military hand power to civilians. The demonstrators have been sustained through lengthy negotiations and armed attacks by donations of food and drinks, many distributed by an extraordinary tea seller. Awadeya Mahmoud begins her day at 5 in the morning next to Khartoum University, across from Sudan's Defense Ministry, surrounded by thousands of protesters. Wearing a colorful blue Toab, a traditional Sudanese robe with head covering, and sitting in the middle of a makeshift kitchen, the 61-year-old and four young, female aides cook up to 10,000 meals daily. The women cook potatoes, vegetables, beans and waika, a traditional Sudanese dish made with dry meat. Supported by donations from food makers, Mahmoud has been distributing the free meals for protesters since April 12, a day after the military ousted President Omar al-Bashir from three decades in power. The protesters are demanding the Transitional Military Council hand power to civilians. The military has agreed – but only if it can hold the majority of seats on a ruling council, which protest leaders reject. While the stand-off drags out, protesters at the sit-in depend on Mahmoud's support. She says the youth who are guarding the barricades need food and drinks so they can be strong enough to stay there the whole night. The tea and other drinks from Mahmoud and her team are key for protesters to avoid dehydration. Most days, the temperature in Khartoum peaks above 40 degrees Celsius or 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Protester Wail Mohamed Abdullah says Mahmoud is not just giving them sustenance but also inspiration. "We regularly come to eat at the place of Aunt Awadia, the mother of our revolution," he says. "She makes everything - including food, tea, coffee and other drinks. She helps us a lot, says Abdullah, and is here until dinner and sometimes even late into the night. So, we really appreciate her spirit of camaraderie." Mahmoud understands the hardship faced by those who take on the power of the Sudanese state from personal experience. She was among hundreds of thousands displaced by conflict in Sudan's South Kordofan region, on the border with South Sudan, and became a roadside tea seller to support her family. It is not the first time Mahmoud has taken a lead role and been recognized as an inspiration. Mahmoud founded the Women's Food and Tea Sellers' Cooperative, which represents thousands of displaced and migrant women who depend on selling tea to survive. The U.S. State Department in 2016 gave her the International Women of Courage Award for supporting women tea sellers and in other informal professions. An assistant to Mahmoud, Muna Alamin, says she is optimistic that - with their help - Sudan's revolution against tyranny can be achieved. "We come to serve our nation," says Alamin, "and we ask God to help us achieve our goals of freedom, peace and justice for all the Sudanese people." Despite Sudanese security forces' attempts to clear the sit-in by force, Mahmoud and her team insist they will keep serving meals to protesters until they reach their shared goal – a return to democracy. "We came here to help our sons and daughters in creating a new Sudan that we dream to make," says Mahmoud:" A new Sudan that treats all of us as equal citizens and gives us free healthcare and education." She stressed that a new government should support Sudan's poor people, end oppression, drop all laws against women, and increase its female representation. Until those goals are achieved, says Mahmoud, they'll keep serving food and tea to protesters.

Suvorov Square () is a city square in Moscow, Russia. Specifically, it is located in the Meshchansky District of the Central Administrative Okrug of Moscow. Durov Street, Oktyabrskaya Street and Soviet Army Street are among the many streets that overlook the square.

History and development
Until the 15th century, the Naprudnaya River bed was located on the site of the square. The development of the territory along the Naprudnaya stream began in the 16th century. Until 1917, the area was called Ekaterininskaya, where the Moscow School of the Order of St Catherine was located fron 1802–1918). In the 20s and 30s, the square was radically transformed. The Naprudnaya River was enclosed in a pipe all over, and a square appeared in the center of the square. The Church of St. John the Warrior was demolished in 1947, which was replaced by the predecessor of the now Slavyanka Hotel. Between 1935-1940, the Red Army Theater was built in the northern part of the square. In 1928, the building of the Catherine Institute was rebuilt and to house the Central House of the Red Army, where a bust of Mikhail Frunze was erected in front of the building. It was the renamed Commune Square in 1932 under the Soviet authorities in the RSFSR. In 1982, a monument to Russian military leader and national hero Alexander Suvorov was erected in the center of the square. It is surrounded on the south and southwest by the Parry Rift Valley, on the east by the Nares Rift Valley and on the northwest by the Kaltag Fault, which form part of the Canadian Arctic Rift System.

The Queen Elizabeth Islands Subplate formed in the mid-Tertiary during the final stages of the Eurekan Rifting Episode when a large triangular region became severed from the rest of the North American continent. It consists of a number of smaller subplates that are separated by faults. The faults controlled the shapes of the subplates which in turn determined the shapes of the present day islands.

Israel Heading Toward Political Crisis

【Move to another page】
Quote
http://bit.ly/2JKR54I
Israel Heading Toward Political Crisis "This is a night of a marvelous victory! Marvelous!" Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu triumphantly declared after hearing the election results. That was 49 days ago, and Netanyahu appeared securely positioned to — come July — become the longest serving prime minister in the Jewish state's history. However, early Tuesday, in the second of four readings, the Knesset voted 66 to 44 to order a new round of elections. Netanyahu sought the vote as he has failed to form a coalition and his deadline is Wednesday. What happened? Netanyahu's Likud party and his "natural allies" — the right wing and ultra-orthodox parties — command 65 seats in the 120-member Knesset. Each faction, but one, can deny him the 61 votes he needs to win the Knesset's confidence. But two of those factions, the ultra-orthodox Yahadut Hatorah and the secular Israel Beitenu, are led by dominant figures. Their clash is over a plan to reduce the number of rabbinical students who get automatic, renewable, draft deferments. Some 50,000 Israelis learn in those institutions and the rabbis see to them. Israel Beitenu's leader, former defense minister Avigdor Liberman, insists on a passing a law to gradually reduce the number of deferments. "We are not talking of a right-wing government, but a government of net halacha [Jewish religious law] and we are definitely no partners to forming a government of halacha," he said Monday. If Liberman votes against the confidence motion, Netanyahu will not win the Knesset's confidence. New elections may not be bad for the right- wing, which is under-represented in the Knesset. More than a quarter of a million votes went down the drain, in April, when two right-wing lists failed to pass the threshold. That is tantamount to some seven mandates and if there are new elections soon, the factions that proved their survivability could gain more power. Netanyahu's rush to call for new elections seems to be a move to deny President Reuven Rivlin the opportunity of giving another member of Knesset a chance to form a coalition. Netanyahu feared Rivlin, who is no fan of the prime minister, would ask former education minister Gideon Sa'ar, also of the Likud, to try his hand. There are other options and once a new elections bill turns into law, the president's hands are tied. Another option could be former military Chief of General Staff Benny Gantz, who leads the Blue-White faction and like the Likud, has 35 mandates. Blue-White can hardly expect support from the ultra-orthodox or right-wing parties but made a proposal: "If someone else would head the Likud, anyone but Netanyahu, a national unity government could be formed," Blue-White's Yair Lapid, a former finance minister, said. Gantz indicated as much. "Netanyahu's insistence on preserving his seat at all costs is the main and only barrier to forming a national agreement party," he said. The Likud and Blue-White would then have a majority, would not need more partners, and would follow a center-right, more moderate policy. Which boils the issue down to Netanyahu. He will be charged with bribery and breach of trust unless he convinces the attorney general, Avichai Mandelblit, to drop the accusations. The hearing is scheduled for October. Netanyahu insists the accusations are baseless and he will disprove them in the hearing. But he seems to be doing his best to postpone a hearing and has argued voters chose him despite all the bad news. A first class campaigner, he persuaded many Israelis that he and his family are victims of persecution. Political science professor Avraham Diskin told VOA that Netanyahu has become "a symbol to Likud voters and members of Knesset, of a pursuit of the Right." That is why his faction backs him, Diskin suggested. Netanyahu's detractors refer to the draft charge sheets, leaked evidence, the fact that the chief of police when he was investigated and the attorney general are right-wingers whom Netanyahu had hand-picked. To secure his freedom, Netanyahu seeks parliamentary immunity and is likely to get it, especially if he is prime minister. The High Court of Justice can nullify his immunity and there is a Likud move to amend the law so the Knesset can override a High Court of Justice decision. Netanyahu's coalition partners support the change which infuriates the opposition, lawyers, and judges who warn against weakening the judiciary that protects people's rights.

Liu Xianjue (; 12 December 1931 – 16 May 2019) was a Chinese architectural historian and educator. He studied under all "Four Modern Masters in Architecture" of China and taught at Southeast University for more than 50 years. He advocated for the protection of architectural heritage in Nanjing and advised the government of Macau in its successful application for World Heritage status for the Historic Centre of Macau.

Early life
Liu was born on 12 December 1931 in Fuzhou, Fujian, Republic of China, with his ancestral home in Hefei. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, his family took refuge in Ningdu, Jiangxi, where he attended middle school and learned to speak English from Christian missionaries.

Liu entered the Department of Architecture of Hangchow University in 1949, before transferring to Nanjing University the following year. In 1952, the architecture program of Nanjing University became part of Nanjing Institute of Technology (now Southeast University), where he studied under Yang Tingbao and graduated in 1953.

In 1953, Liu began his graduate studies at Tsinghua University, where he was taught by Liang Sicheng. Besides Yang Tingbao and Liang Sicheng, he was also taught by the other two of China's "Four Modern Masters in Architecture": Liu Dunzhen and Tung Chuin.

Career
After graduating in 1956, Liu spent half a century teaching and researching at the Southeast University School of Architecture. He published 30 books and more than 100 papers. He advised 26 doctoral students, 50 master's students, and three postdoctoral researchers. He was conferred the special education prize by the Chinese Architectural Society and awarded a special pension by the National Government of China.

Liu was a strong advocate for the protection of the Republican era architecture of Nanjing. In 1988, he surveyed Nanjing's architecture and chose about 200 valuable buildings for conservation. However, more than 40 of the buildings were demolished during the urban renewal of the city. Liu lobbied the media and the government for protection of Nanjing's architectural heritage, and the municipal government eventually designated the remaining buildings as protected architecture.

In 2000, Liu advised the government of Macau in its application for World Heritage status for the Historic Centre of Macau. After three years of research, he published the book The Architectural Heritage of Macau, and the Historic Centre of Macau was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005.

Liu died in Nanjing on 16 May 2019, at the age of 87.

Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)

Partido Unión Republicana (Republican Union Party) was a political party in Puerto Rico. The party formed in early 1932 from the merger of Partido Republicano Puro and Partido Alianza Puertorriqueña. Its president was Rafael Martínez Nadal.<ref>De los orígenes de los partidos políticos en Puerto Rico al Partido Republicano Puertorriqueño y don José Celso Barbosa II. Claridad. ==Trajectory==
The party formed early in 1932 from the union of Partido Republicano Puro and Partido Alianza Puertorriqueña, after the dissolution of Partido Alianza Puertorriqueña and the reconciliation between the Republicanos Puro and the Republicanos who had left Partido Republicano in 1928. However, before the 1932 elections, Partido Unión Republicana joined forces with the Partido Socialista to form Coalición Republicana Socialista. The pact between these two parties (Unión Republicana and Socialista) was renewed before the 1936 elections to continue in force during that electoral cycle.

Subsequent to the 1936 elections, Partido Unión Republicana reconstituted itself as Partido Unión Republicana Progresista, with Celestino Iriarte as its president. Later on yet, in 1948, Partido Unión Republicana re-branded itself as Partido Estadista.<ref>De los orígenes de los partidos políticos en Puerto Rico al Partido Republicano Puertorriqueño y don José Celso Barbosa II. Claridad. In 2001, Saperston written and directed The Journey. It documents a cross-country trip he started in 1995 with three friends in a VW bus. The original intention for the trip was to follow the Grateful Dead and work a ski season in Aspen, CO. Tornadoes Rake 2 Oklahoma Cities, Killing 2 and Injuring 29

Tornadoes Rake 2 Oklahoma Cities, Killing 2 and Injuring 29 A tornado leveled a motel and tore through a mobile home park near Oklahoma City overnight, killing two people and injuring at least 29 others before a second twister raked a suburb of Tulsa more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) away, authorities said Sunday. The first tornado touched down in El Reno, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Oklahoma City, late Saturday night. It crossed an interstate and walloped the American Budget Value Inn before ripping through the Skyview Estates trailer park, flipping and leveling homes, Mayor Matt White said at a news conference. "It's a tragic scene out there, White said, adding later that, "People have absolutely lost everything. He said the city established a GoFundMe site, the City of El Reno Tornado Relief Fund, for affected families. Several other businesses were also damaged, though not to the same extent as the motel. The two people who were killed were in the mobile home park, White said. He did not provide additional details about them. The 29 people who were injured were taken to hospitals, where some were undergoing surgery. Some of the injuries were deemed critical, he said. The National Weather Service gave the tornado an EF3 rating, meaning it had wind speeds of 136-165 mph (219-266 kph). Personnel who investigated the damage said the tornado began around 10:28 p.m. Saturday and lasted for four minutes. The tornado was about 75 yards wide at its widest point and was on the ground for 2.2 miles (3.5 kilometers). The tornado was spawned by a powerful storm system that rolled through the state -- the latest in a week of violent storms to hit the flood-weary Plains and Midwest that have been blamed for at least 11 deaths, including the two killed in El Reno. Early Sunday, another tornado destroyed several buildings and downed trees and power lines in the Tulsa suburb of Sapulpa, which is 110 miles (177 kilometers) northeast of El Reno. Pete Snyder, a hydrometeorological technician with the weather service in Tulsa, said crews were assessing damage to determine the tornado's rating. The area also experienced damage from strong straight-line winds, he said. The Sapulpa Police Department said on its Facebook page that it hadn't heard of any deaths and that only a few minor injuries had been reported. Residents wandered around after sunrise to survey the damage, carefully avoiding fallen utility poles that blocked some streets. Among the buildings that were destroyed was a historic railroad building built in the early 1900s that the Farmers Feed Store had been using for storage. A furniture store's warehouse was also destroyed. In El Reno, emergency crews sifted through the rubble at the trailer park and motel, where the second story collapsed into a pile of debris strewn about the first floor and parking lot. Tweety Garrison, 63, told The Associated Press that she was in her mobile home with her husband, two young grandchildren and a family friend when she heard the storm coming and immediately hit the ground. Moments later, she heard her neighbor's mobile home slam into hers before it flipped over and landed on her roof. Garrison said the incident lasted five to 10 minutes and that she received a tornado warning on her phone but the sirens didn't go off until after the twister hit. Her 32-year-old son, Elton Garrison, said he heard the wailing tornado sirens and had just laid down at home about a half-mile (1 kilometer) away when his phone rang. He recognized his mother's number, but there was no voice on the other end when he answered. "I thought, `That's weird, he said. Then his mother called back, and delivered a chilling message: "We're trapped. He said when he arrived at his parent's home, he found it blocked by debris and sitting with another trailer on top of it. He began clearing a path to the home so that he could eventually lift a portion of an outside wall just enough so that all five occupants could slip beneath it and escape. "My parents were in there and two of my kids, one 9 and the other 12. ... My main emotion was fear, said Elton Garrison, who has lived in El Reno for about 26 years. "I couldn't get them out of there quick enough. He said he wasn't alarmed by the warning sirens when he first heard them at home. "We hear them all the time here, so it didn't seem like a big deal. ... I heard a lot of rain with the wind. But when it kind of got calm all of a sudden, that's when it didn't feel right. He said his parents had only recently recovered after losing their previous home to a fire a few years ago. "Now this, he said, before expressing gratitude that everyone inside his parents' home had emerged without serious injury. In the next breath, he added: "Items can be replaced. Lives can't. The storm is the latest to hit the flood-weary central U.S. and dumped yet more rain in the region's already bloated waterways. In Tulsa, authorities advised residents of some neighborhoods on Sunday to consider leaving for higher ground because the Arkansas River is stressing the city's old levee system. Downriver and about 100 miles (161 kilometers) southeast of Tulsa in Arkansas' second-largest city, Fort Smith, residents were preparing for what meteorologists are predicting will be the worst flooding in recorded history.

Christen Limbaugh Bloom: How being vulnerable can actually be fun (no, really) It's no secret that vulnerability gets a bad rap in today's culture. From our dating lives to the work world, many of us adopt the fear that if we show all of our cards, we'll get burned.
