Climate Activists Occupy Paris Mall as Global Extinction Rebellion Protests Begin

Hundreds of climate activists barricaded themselves into a Paris shopping center Saturday as security forces tried to remove them, ahead of a planned series of protests around the world by the Extinction Rebellion movement.

Campaigners faced off against police and some inconvenienced shoppers as they occupied part of the Italie 2 mall in southeast Paris.

They unfurled banners with slogans like "Burn capitalism not petrol" above restaurants and the window displays fashion boutiques.

A police officer removes a bicycle outside Lambeth County Court, during a raid on an Extinction Rebellion storage facility, in London, Oct. 5, 2019.

The protest comes ahead of planned disruption to 60 cities around the world from Monday in a fortnight of civil disobedience from Extinction Rebellion (XR), which is warning of an environmental "apocalypse."

As the center tried to close in the evening, security forces ordered the protesters to leave the area, activists told AFP.

According to images broadcast on social networks, police then tried to enter the building, while protesters blocked entrances with tables and chairs.

"I am with XR to say stop this crazy system before it destroys everything," one young woman told AFP, giving only her first name Lucie.

Other campaign groups also joined in with the Paris shopping center demonstration, including some members of the "yellow vest" anti-government protest group.

Non-violent protests are chiefly planned by XR from Monday in Europe, North America and Australia, but events are also set to take place in India, Buenos Aires, Cape Town and Wellington.

Activists arrive at a camp set for Extinction Rebellion climate activists next to the Reichstag in Berlin, Oct. 5, 2019. Hundreds of activists plan to block major roads in the German capital in a week of protests for new climate-protection policies.

Another protest was held in Berlin Saturday, with campaigners setting up camp near the parliament building.

"To governments of the world: we declared a climate and ecological emergency. You did not do enough. To everybody else: rebel," XR said on its website ahead of its International Rebellion wave of activism.

"You can't count on us or Greta to do this for you," it said, referring to teenage Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. "Look inside yourself and rebel."

Extinction Rebellion was established last year in Britain by academics and has become one of the world's fastest-growing environmental movements.

Campaigners want the government to declare a climate and ecological emergency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2025, halt biodiversity loss and be led by new "citizens' assemblies on climate and ecological justice."

Will Sudanese Accept New Women's Soccer League?

Will Sudanese Accept New Women's Soccer League?

Twenty-one-year-old Marilyn Zakarya is one of the players in the Sudanese women's football league that launched this week. Zakarya came from South Sudan to follow her dream in Khartoum. But she is worried whether Sudan's conservative society will accept women's football after years of restrictions.

Zakarya has been passionate about playing soccer since she was a child. She left her family in South Sudan to pursue the sport in Sudan, where a new women's league began play this week.

Zakarya says she was playing in Wau, Bahr Ghazal state, then came to Khartoum and joined Tahadi team with coach Sara Edward. Before the league started, she had some issues with school, so she stopped and then moved from Tahadi to Kornk team.

Players from Sudan's of Al-tahadi women's soccer team react after taking part in Sudan's first women's league soccer match at the Khartoum stadium, Khartoum, Sudan, Sept. 30, 2019.

More obstacles to overcome

It took three decades of battling obstacles and objections to launch the women's league, which is sponsored by Sudan's Ministry of Youth and Sports.

It's still not easy for some of the women players. Zakarya says she hears insults whenever she wears her football uniform in public and gets comments about her short hair, too.

"One of the difficulties I always face is that I love to wear the football suit when I go for the training, people bully me by saying am I a boy or a girl, and why I look like this and why we look masculine," she said. "They also say even men couldn't win cups, so we won't do anything."

Critics of the women's league are also active on social media. Politician Ehssan Fagiri thinks that is because the Islamist government of former president Omar al-Bashir restricted women's rights for so long.

When the former government came to power, Fagiri said, it targeted women with laws and local public orders to send them back to home.

"I don't think it's nonacceptance," she says, "it's more like an accumulated social culture for 30 years. We need to change it."

Players of Al-tahadi (green kits) and Al-Difaa (yellow kits) soccer teams fight for the ball during Sudan's first women's league soccer match at the Khartoum stadium, Khartoum, Sudan, Sept. 30, 2019.

Tight security not needed

Because of concerns the games would cause unrest, riot police have been on hand for the opening matches. However, national coach Alaa Mahmoud says the games have come off without any problems.

Mahmoud says he didn't expect that women and men would attend the matches, but it happened and everything is going well up to now. He hopes for the league to continue the same way it started and hopes to form a national team in order to represent Sudan worldwide.

Zakarya says her mother supported her dream and persuaded her father to embrace it too before she came to Khartoum.

She hopes that in the aftermath of Sudan's revolution, people will change their minds about what women should be allowed to do — and will cheer them as they play football.

Photonic topological insulator

Physicsch: /* Background */

Photonic topological insulators are artificial electromagnetic materials that support topologically non-trivial, unidirectional states of light.Photonic topological phases are classical electromagnetic wave analogies of electronic topological phases studied in condensed matter physics, and similar to their electronic counterparts, they, can provide robust unidirectional channels for light propagation.

The field that studies these phases of light is referred to as topological photonics, even though the working frequency of these electromagnetic topological insulators may fall in other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum such as the microwave range.
History
Topological order in solid state systems has been studied in condensted matter physics since the discovery of integer quantum Hall effect. But they attracted considerable interest from the physics community after the proposals for possible observation of symmetry-protected topological phases (or the so-called toplogical insulators) in graphene, and experimental observation of a 2D topological insulator in CdTe/HgTe/CdTe quantum wells in 2007.

In 2008, Haldane and Raghu proposed that unidirectional electromagnetic states analogous to (integer) quantum Hall states can be realized in nonreciprocal magnetic photonic crystals. This was followed by the proposals for analogous quantum spin Hall states of electromagnetic waves that are now known as photonic topological insulators.

George Brown (died 21 October 1628), who later adopted the name Gregory, was an English Benedictine and prior of St Laurence, Dieulouard. He was, for some time, identified as the translator

Biography
Brown was born in Essex, and was educated, for two years, at the Spanish Catholic seminary, the English College, Douai. After this, he left to join the Order of Saint Benedict (or Benedictines)) in Spain. In 1605, he was professed at the abbey of Santa Maria, in Obarnes, where he took the religious name of Gregory. From 1609 to 1610, Brown was the prior of the monastery of St Laurence, Dieulouard, in Lorraine. This monastery was been occupied by English Benedictines, founded in 1608 by monks fleeing the English Reformation, and trained Catholic missionaries for their home country. According to Athanasius Allanson, Brown was "a diligent promoter" of Benedictine religious houses in France and the Low Countries. From 1613 until his death, Brown resided at the French Benedictine convent of nuns at Chelles, joining Francis Walgrave and Augustine Bradshaw, as requests from Père Bénard, prior of the College of Cluny. Here, Brown died on 21 October 1618.

The English translation of the Italian biography of Mary Magdalene de' Pazzi, Life of St Mary Magdalen de' Pazzi (1619), was attributed to Brown by 19th-century Catholic Historian, George Oliver. This identification was based on Oliver's incorrect identification of Brown as chaplain of the English Benedictine monastery, St Benet, Brussels, based on a misreading of the monastery's convent chronicle. As the original translation had been dedicated to Lady Mary Percy, abbess of the Brussels monastery, Oliver identified Brown as it's author. This identification has been contested by A. F. Haiti Protesters Demand US, International Community Stop Supporting President Moise

Yves Manuel in Port-au-Prince, Monica Lindor in Jacmel, Socrate Ameyes Jean Pierre in Miragoane, Charles Makenson in Jeremie, Innocente Desgranges in Petit Goave, Lucson Palmeus in Port-de-Paix and Junior Racine in St. Marc contributed to this report

WASHINGTON / PORT-AU-PRINCE - Thousands filled the streets of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, as well as cities to the north and south again Friday to demand President Jovenel Moise resign.

"Jojo Mele! (Jojo's in trouble) Jojo Mele!" they chanted in unison to a raboday beat, waving their hands and clapping. Some held tree branches while others lifted posters up high for all to see that read: "Demisyon Jovenel" (Resign Jovenel.) They also had a message for the international community: stop propping up our corrupt government.

Opposition leaders and anti-corruption militants called for nationwide protests, saying their goal was to march to the United Nations headquarters, this time to make sure their demands are heard.

"We give Mrs. La Lime (Helen Meagher La Lime of the United States, the U.N. Secretary-General's Special Representative for Haiti) 24 hours to remove Jovenel from the country," opposition Senator Evaliere Beauplan said. "If she doesn't do it, we will be back here every day until she gives in. She must stop supporting corruption and the massacre of the people (at the hands of the police)."

Opposition politician Assad Volcy was surrounded by a crowd of protesters as he stood in front of the U.N. office.

"We came to tell Jovenel's bosses, the people who are working with him, today the people of Haiti are terminating Jovenel's term," Volcy told VOA Creole. "If the white people, the international community love him so much, (then) take him. Let him go lead the United States. Let him go lead Brazil. Let him go lead the OAS."

What sparked protests

Demonstrators scuffle with the police during a protest calling for the resignation of President Jovenel Moise, near the airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Oct. 4, 2019.

Haiti has been plagued for months by an increase in violence, a fuel shortage, high inflation, double-digit unemployment and food insecurity.

Weekly protests have negatively impacted businesses, schools and tourism.

President Moise is blamed for being unable to turn the situation around. He has denied corruption allegations and insists he will not resign. Instead, he ordered his acting prime minister, Jean Michel Lapin, to make new Cabinet appointments, and called for a national dialogue to discuss possible solutions for the country's problems.

The opposition refused and said Moise's departure is non-negotiable.

Core Group

Whistleblower and opposition Senator Saurel Jacinthe, viewed by some as a hero for outing lawmaker colleagues for accepting bribes for votes in parliament, joined the protesters in the Carrefour Aeroport neighborhood of the capital.

"The U.N., the Core Group is only waiting for one thing," he told VOA Creole. "They are consulting with different sectors to see if there is support for Jovenel. If all the sectors they consult with are against Jovenel, they will take the necessary measures."

The Core Group is comprised of the U.N. secretary-general's Special Representative for Haiti and the ambassadors of the United States, European Union, France, Canada, Brazil, Spain and the Special Representative of the OAS. Members have been meeting with Haitians from all sectors of society this week, in addition to President Moise, to hear grievances and opinions on how to help the country move forward.

Police presence

Protestors calling for the resignation of President Jovenel Moise raise their arms in front of a group of police in riot gear, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Oct. 4, 2019.

Unlike last Friday's protest in Port-au-Prince, when protesters attacked and looted police stations around town with little to no resistance from law enforcement, the police and special forces teams were highly visible as they patrolled the streets, at times aggressively.

VOA Creole reporter Matiado Vilme said she was injured after a "CIMO" (Corps d'intervention et de maintien d'ordre) agent grabbed her wrist and twisted it as she said she attempted to record a video in front of the U.N. office. Local journalists came to her rescue, yelling at the agent and calling on colleagues to film the attack so everyone could see what happened, she said. Francois Frantz, a reporter for KAPZYNEWS, said he also was pushed around.

"We always say that the police is aware that the people have a constitutional right to protest," Gary Desrosiers, spokesman for the National Police Force (PNH) told VOA Creole. "The police even has a duty to accompany and protect the protesters. Providing security for both the protesters and the citizens who are not protesting is a work in progress."

When reporters pressed him about why the officers were being so aggressive toward them, he responded that he was not in charge of the strategy for the day, but that police are trained to see things that civilians don't see.

To the north and south

Meanwhile, in the town of Jacmel, to the south, protesters put up roadblocks made from tree branches, rocks and tires during the early morning hours. Roads were only accessible on foot or by motorbike.

In Petit Goave, a rara band played as protesters marched through town to the beat of their music.

In Miragoane, protesters were joined by members of the Democratic Sector opposition group as they made their way around the city.

In Port-de-Paix, a large crowd filled the streets with anti-corruption banners in hand. One man held a poster that read, "We'll keep fighting until the corn ripens to untangle ourselves from the killer Jovenel." A drum beat accentuated by a horn filled the air.

In Jeremie, also in the south, protesters took to the streets as well.

Affiliate station reporter Charles Makenson said the protest was halted after an unidentified gunman opened fire on the crowd. At least three people were wounded, he said.

To the north in St. Marc, things turned violent as well. A group of protesters armed with rocks and bottles marched to the local jail and pelted it. They were unsuccessful in breaking in. Another group of protesters threw rocks at the national bank, shattering its windows. They also burned a pile of trash to block the main road.

Damages

PNH spokesman Desrosiers told VOA Creole he was not prepared to give an estimate on damages nor how many people were injured or killed during Friday's protests.

Protesters plan to be back in the streets on Sunday.

House Democrats Issue Subpoena to White House in Impeachment Inquiry

House Democrats Issue Subpoena to White House in Impeachment Inquiry

U.S. Democrats in the House of Representatives have sent a subpoena to the White House for documents related to their impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump.

The heads of three House committees said in a statement Friday that the subpoena is necessary because the White House "refused to engage with — or even respond to — multiple requests for documents from our Committees on a voluntary basis."

House investigators Friday also sent an extensive request for documents to Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts with Ukraine, citing reports that a Pence aid may have listened to the July phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that is at the center of the impeachment investigation.

Constitutional duty

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., speaks at a news conference with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., at the Capitol in Washington, Oct. 2, 2019.

Earlier Friday, Trump asserted that he has a constitutional duty to fight corruption, in his latest remarks explaining his requests to foreign governments to investigate his political opponents.

"This is not about politics. This is about corruption. If you look and you read our Constitution and many other things, I have an obligation to look at corruption. I have an actual obligation and a duty," Trump said to reporters Friday at the White House.

At the heart of the Democrats' impeachment inquiry in the House of Representatives, which the opposition party controls, is what the intelligence committee's chairman, Adam Schiff, describes as "a damning call in which the president pressured a foreign power to investigate a political rival, harming national security."

In a significant development, Republican Senator Mitt Romney of Utah, weighed in.

Romney, himself a former Republican Party nominee for president, is the first senator of his party to directly criticize Trump's actions.

It would take 20 Republicans in the Senate to join all of their Democratic colleagues, plus the two independents who reliably vote with the Democrats to remove the president from office following any impeachment in the House.

Trump said Friday that while Democrats "unfortunately have the votes" in the House to impeach him, he predicts he will "win" in any subsequent trial in the Republican-led Senate.

Trump again reiterated Friday that no pressure was exerted during the July 25 call with Ukraine's president.

Urging China, Ukraine to investigate

The president, however, told reporters Thursday he would like both Ukraine and China to investigate ties between their countries and the son of former Vice President Biden, a leading Democrat running for president.

Democrats say those statements clearly give them grounds for impeachment and demonstrate Trump is openly abusing the power of his office by asking foreign governments to do his personal political bidding.

"I don't care about Biden's campaign," Trump stressed Friday. "This is about corruption."

FILE - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy speaks during a news conference in Kyiv, Ukraine, Oct. 1, 2019.

Senior U.S. diplomats urged Zelenskiy to launch an investigation sought by Trump into Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, according to text messages released Thursday by U.S. congressional investigators.

House Democratic investigators released the messages after interviewing former U.S. special envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker on Thursday for nearly 10 hours.

The texts reveal a discussion between Volker and two other U.S. diplomats about how to handle Trump's requests to investigate Biden and his son.

One exchange shows Volker writing to a top Zelenskiy aide, promising the newly elected Ukrainian president a visit to the White House in exchange for the probe.

Trump pressed Zelenskiy for an investigation during the phone call that sparked a formal complaint, reportedly by a Central Intelligence Agency officer who had been assigned to the National Security Council. The complaint eventually triggered the House impeachment investigation into Trump.

The president has accused Biden of abusing his power by pressuring Ukraine to back away from a criminal investigation that could have implicated his son.

Trump and his allies have not released any evidence demonstrating the Bidens' were involved in any illegal activity and the former vice president has vociferously defended his reputation in recent days.

Influential Iraqi Cleric Calls on Government to Resign Over Protests

Influential Iraqi Cleric Calls on Government to Resign Over Protests

One of Iraq's most influential clerics has called for Iraq's government to resign as anti-government protesters gathered in Baghdad for a fourth day of demonstrations against unemployment, poor public services and corruption.

Moqtada al-Sadr, the former Shiite militia leader who leads the largest opposition bloc in parliament, said in a statement Friday that "the government should resign and early elections should be held under U.N. supervision."

Iraqi forces have been opening fire on protesters, and medical and security sources say at least 53 people have been killed this week.

An injured protester is rushed to the hospital after being shot during a demonstration in Baghdad, Iraq, Oct. 4, 2019.

On Friday, Iraqi security forces again opened fire on protesters. Journalists on the scene reported that police appeared to be shooting directly at protesters and not into the air.

Witnesses say at least 10 people were killed Friday and many more injured.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) issued a statement Friday saying "the deaths of civilians and the growing number of wounded at the ongoing protests across the country is particularly worrying, as is the use of firearms for restoring public order."

The ICRC has called on both sides to show restraint as it monitors developments on the ground.

'Bitter medicine'

Earlier, Iraq Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, during a televised address to the nation, called on protesters to go home, saying their "legitimate demands" had been heard.

Anti-government protesters set fires and close a street during a demonstration in Baghdad, Iraq, Oct. 4, 2019.

Abdul-Mahdi said that the security measures, including the temporary curfew imposed, were "difficult choices" but they were needed like "bitter medicine" that had to be swallowed.

Along with at least 53 people killed, hundreds of people have been wounded since the demonstrations began Tuesday. The demonstrations have spread in Baghdad and in areas south of the capital.

The protests are the first major challenge to Abdul-Mahdi, who formed his government a year ago.

Investigation ordered

The government blamed the violence on "groups of riot inciters" and said security forces worked to protect the safety of peaceful protesters.

Iraqi security forces fire tear gas while anti-government protesters gather for a demonstration in Baghdad, Iraq, Oct. 4, 2019.

Iraq's parliament has ordered a probe into the violence.

Many Iraqi citizens blame politicians and government officials for the corruption that has prevented the country from rebounding from years of sectarian violence and the battle to defeat Islamic State militants, who at one point controlled large areas in the northern and western part of the country.

At his weekly Cabinet meeting earlier this week, the prime minister released a statement promising jobs for graduates. He also ordered the oil ministry and other government agencies to apply a 50 percent quota for local workers in future contracts with foreign countries.

Diahann Carroll, Oscar-Nominated, Pioneering Actress, Dies

Diahann Carroll, the Oscar-nominated actress and singer who won critical acclaim as the first black woman to star in a non-servant role in a TV series as "Julia," has died. She was 84.

Carroll's daughter, Susan Kay, told The Associated Press her mother died Friday in Los Angeles of cancer.

During her long career, Carroll earned a Tony Award for the musical "No Strings" and an Academy Award nomination for best actress for "Claudine."

FILE - This 1972 file image shows singer and actress Diahann Carroll.

But she was perhaps best known for her pioneering work on "Julia." Carroll played Julia Baker, a nurse whose husband had been killed in Vietnam, in the groundbreaking situation comedy that aired from 1968 to 1971.

"Diahann Carroll walked this Earth for 84 years and broke ground with every footstep. An icon. One of the all-time greats," director Ava DuVernay wrote on Twitter. "She blazed trails through dense forests and elegantly left diamonds along the path for the rest of us to follow. Extraordinary life. Thank you, Ms. Carroll."

Although she was not the first black woman to star in her own TV show (Ethel Waters played a maid in the 1950s series "Beulah"), she was the first to star as someone other than a servant.

NBC executives were wary about putting "Julia" on the network during the racial unrest of the 1960s, but it was an immediate hit.

It had its critics, though, including some who said Carroll's character, who is the mother of a young son, was not a realistic portrayal of a black American woman in the 1960s.

"They said it was a fantasy," Carroll recalled in 1998. "All of this was untrue. Much about the character of Julia I took from my own life, my family."

On stage

FILE - Co-stars Diahann Carroll, left, and Richard Kiley flank composer Richard Rodgers backstage after the opening of "No Strings" at the 54th Street Theatre in New York City, March 15, 1962.

Not shy when it came to confronting racial barriers, Carroll won her Tony portraying a high-fashion American model in Paris who has a love affair with a white American author in the 1959 Richard Rodgers musical "No Strings." Critic Walter Kerr described her as "a girl with a sweet smile, brilliant dark eyes and a profile regal enough to belong on a coin."

She appeared often in plays previously considered exclusive territory for white actresses: "Same Time, Next Year," "Agnes of God" and "Sunset Boulevard" (as faded star Norma Desmond, the role played by Gloria Swanson in the 1950 film).

"I like to think that I opened doors for other women, although that wasn't my original intention," she said in 2002.

On screen

Her film career was sporadic. She began with a secondary role in "Carmen Jones" in 1954 and five years later appeared in "Porgy and Bess," although her singing voice was dubbed because it wasn't considered strong enough for the Gershwin opera. Her other films included "Goodbye Again," "Hurry Sundown," "Paris Blues," and "The Split."

The 1974 film "Claudine" provided her most memorable role. She played a hard-bitten single mother of six who finds romance in Harlem with a garbage man played by James Earl Jones.

FILE - Diahann Carroll, John Forsythe, Linda Evans and Joan Collins from "Dynasty" cut a cake to commemorate the production of 150 episodes of the show in Los Angeles, Sept. 24, 1986.

In the 1980s, she joined in the long-running prime-time soap opera "Dynasty" as Dominique Deveraux, the glamorous half-sister of Blake Carrington; her physical battles with Alexis Carrington, played by Joan Collins, were among fan highlights. More recently, she had a number of guest shots and small roles in TV series, including playing the mother of Isaiah Washington's character, Dr. Preston Burke, on "Grey's Anatomy" and a stretch on the TV show "White Collar" as the widow June.

In nightclubs

She also returned to her roots in nightclubs. In 2006, she made her first club appearance in New York in four decades, singing at Feinstein's at the Regency. Reviewing a return engagement in 2007, a New York Times critic wrote that she sang "Both Sides Now" with "the reflective tone of a woman who has survived many severe storms and remembers every lightning flash and thunderclap."

Carol Diann Johnson was born in New York City and attended the High School for the Performing Arts. Her father was a subway conductor and her mother a homemaker.

She began her career as a model, but a prize from "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts" TV show led to nightclub engagements.

In her 1998 memoir "Diahann," Carroll traced her turbulent romantic life, which included liaisons with Harry Belafonte, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Sammy Davis Jr., Sidney Poitier and David Frost. She even became engaged to Frost, but the engagement was canceled.

An early marriage to nightclub owner Monte Kay resulted in Carroll's only child, Suzanne, as well as a divorce. She also divorced her second husband, retail executive Freddie Glusman, later marrying magazine editor Robert DeLeon, who died.

FILE - Vic Damone, left, and Diahann Carroll show off their rings after wedding in Atlantic City, N.J., Jan. 3, 1987.

Her most celebrated marriage was in 1987, to singer Vic Damone, and the two appeared together in nightclubs. But they separated in 1991 and divorced several years later.

After she was treated for breast cancer in 1998, she spoke out for more money for research and for free screening for women who couldn't afford mammograms.

"We all look forward to the day that mastectomies, chemotherapy and radiation are considered barbaric," Carroll told a gathering in 2000.

Besides her daughter, she is survived by grandchildren August and Sydney.

Cambodian Reporters' Legal Limbo Traumatizes Their Families

Surrounded by a scrum of journalists bristling with equipment and shouting questions, 8-year-old Yeang Socheata has the been-here-done-that air of a person twice her height.

Her hand firmly intertwined with her father's, she ignores uniformed security guards trying to keep the crowd contained.

Her father, Yeang Sothearin, 36, and his colleague, Uon Chhin, 50, are the two former Radio Free Asia (RFA) reporters arrested in Cambodia in November 2017. They denied charges of espionage and producing pornography. Their lawyer said they had only been doing their jobs as journalists.

Their arrests came as Prime Minister Hun Sen's government was cracking down on the press ahead of the July 2018 national election. Radio stations were shuttered and the English-language newspaper The Cambodia Daily was forced to close after receiving a tax bill of more than $6 million.

In an annual ranking of press freedom compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and released earlier this year, Cambodia ranked among the world's worst, falling from 142 to 143 out of 180 countries. In 2018, Cambodia fell by 10 slots.

Journalist Yeang Sothearin stands with his family in front of the municipal court, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Oct. 3, 2019.

Hun Sen's ruling party won the election, and has largely silenced the opposition.

The two journalists, with almost two decades of experience between them, were jailed for nearly 10 months. They have been required to report to the police monthly since their release, and the government has confiscated their passports. RFA, like Voice of America, receives funding from the U.S. government.

Hearings in the case ended on Aug. 9 and a verdict was expected on Aug. 30 but was delayed, Radio Free Asia reported. At the time, Cambodian Ministry of Justice spokesman Chin Malin said the verdict would be announced Oct. 3.

And that was why on a hot, cloudless Thursday morning, Yeang Socheata was once again at her father's side before journalists.

"I was upset," Yeang Socheata said of her father's prison stay.

As her father and Uon Chhin stood before the judge in a packed Municipal Court hearing, Yeang Socheata said she understands her father is a journalist, and "he likes listening to [the] radio, and listening to the news, every morning and every evening."

Her 11-year-old brother, Yeang Sometta, says he wants to become a journalist like his father, adding that his sister likes to be around reporters. "She wants to open a cake shop where journalists and their friends can eat and hang out," he said, eliciting laughs from his sister and their mother, Lam Chantha, as they all waited outside the hearings in a Lucky fast food store.

New investigation

Upstairs, Phnom Penh Municipal Court Judge Im Vannak said he did not have enough evidence to make a decision in the espionage case against the two reporters. He ordered state prosecutors to reinvestigate the case and present it to a different judge.

FILE - Yeang Sothearin and Uon Chhin, former journalists for U.S. founded Radio Free Asia (RFA), sit inside a police vehicle as they arrive for a bail hearing at the Appeals Court in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, April 19, 2018.

The decision drew widespread criticism from press freedom human rights advocates as well as civil society organizations. Shawn Crispin, the senior Southeast Asia representative for the Committee to Protect Journalists, said, "A new investigation into what were already spurious charges is unacceptable and will continue to cast a shadow over Cambodia's darkening press freedom situation."

The court's decision to have the journalists reinvestigated "has one purpose and one purpose only: to telegraph to the world that a free media is meaningless to the Cambodian government, and its presence must be actively suppressed," said the U.S. Agency for Global Media, or USAGM, whose networks include RFA and Voice of America.

In a statement Friday, the USAGM described the accusations brought against the two journalists in 2017 as "trumped-up espionage charges." The agency called on the Cambodian government to dismiss the case against the journalists "immediately" and to "cease its relentless attacks on freedom of the press."

Yeang Sothearin

When the journalists emerged from court, Yeang Socheata reattached herself to her father. Lam Chantha said, "The longer the case goes, the harder it is for my family, and as my husband didn't do anything wrong; delaying the case means limiting his freedom."

"I'm worried about my children," said Lam Chantha. For months, she has kept a close eye on them, saying, "I don't allow them to go out and play freely, even though nothing may happen. But [the order for more investigation] may mean there is something to worry about."

Her husband loses focus, she said. "He feels pressure, and it's not easy for him."

Cambodian psychologist and family counseling expert Huer Sethul has followed the reporters' case and noticed how close the children, particularly Yeang Socheata, stick to their father.

Staying close to Yeang Sothearin "makes them feel safe, strong, and protected," the psychologist said.

Huer Sethul said the uncertainty created by the unresolved case will take a toll on the reporters' home lives.

"It will more or less impact the family, though we cannot predict how much it is going to affect them. But the most vulnerable ones are the kids," he said.

Uon Chhin

Hours after the hearing, Uon Chhin posted to Facebook a recording of a song he sang. He also sent it to a journalist messenger group that provides emotional support to the RFA reporters.

Kheng Sina, 49, who is married to Uon Chhin, told VOA by telephone on Friday that her husband "tries to be relaxed." She said the couple have a 31-year-old son who has a family, and an unmarried daughter, 28, who has been helping ease the family's financial burdens while tending to her mother's medical needs.

"Sometimes [my husband] sings karaoke at home," said Kheng Sina. "He is very frustrated. I worry about him when I notice he has been very stressed from time to time since he was released, because he lost his job and doesn't have any income."

On Friday, a day after the court issued its order, 37 Cambodian civil society groups released a joint statement condemning the decision, and saying more investigation "violates [the reporters'] right to liberty and to a fair trial guaranteed under international law."

The statement continued: "Yesterday's hearing showed that there is a complete lack of evidence in support of these baseless charges exposing fair trial rights violations and highlighting the trial as a blatant affront to freedom of expression and media freedom in Cambodia."

Iraq Forces Fire on Anti-Government Protesters in Bagdad

Iraqi security forces opened fired on anti-government protesters gathering in Baghdad Friday for a fourth day of demonstrations against unemployment, poor public services and corruption.

The security forces fired directly at the protesters, not in the air, an AFP correspondent said.

No casualties have been reported.

Earlier, Iraq's Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi during a televised address to the nation called on protesters to go home, saying their "legitimate demands" had been heard.

Abdul-Mahdi sad that the security measures, including the temporary curfew imposed were "difficult choices" but they were needed like "bitter medicine" that had to be swallowed.

At least 33 people have been killed in protests since Tuesday and hundreds of others have been wounded. The demonstrations have spread in Baghdad and in areas south of the capital.

Demonstrators run at a protest during a curfew, three days after the nationwide anti-government protests turned violent, in Baghdad, Oct. 4, 2019.

Nine people were killed during anti-government protests late Thursday.

Police and medical officials said the protesters were shot to death in Nasiriyah, a city south of the capital of Baghdad.

Iraqi security forces used tear gas and fired live bullets Thursday to disperse protesters in Baghdad.

In addition, authorities have deployed water cannons and rubber bullets to try to break up the crowds.

A police officer and hundreds more have been injured since the protests began.

There were widespread reports of internet outages Thursday.

The protests are the first major challenge to Abdul-Mahdi, who formed his government a year ago.

The government blamed the violence on "groups of riot inciters" and said security forces worked to protect the safety of peaceful protesters.

Iraq's parliament has ordered a probe into the violence.

Many Iraqi citizens blame politicians and government officials for the corruption that has prevented the country from rebounding from years of sectarian violence and the battle to defeat Islamic State militants who at one point controlled large areas in the northern and western part of the country.

At his weekly Cabinet meeting earlier this week, the prime minister released a statement promising jobs for graduates. He also ordered the oil ministry and other government agencies to apply a 50 percent quota for local workers in future contracts with foreign countries.

Venezuelan Border Town Swells With Internal Migrants

Venezuelan Border Town Swells With Internal Migrants

Midday is approaching and the bus terminal in this border town is in a frenzy.

Merchants heading for the center of Venezuela hop on buses and load them with sacks of rice, boxes of medicine, cartons of toothpaste and even car tires that they bought in neighboring Colombia. On the arrivals side, exhausted travelers descend from buses and make their way toward the border, where they will shop for food or get their passports stamped to leave Venezuela for good.

Men carry large loads on their backs as they work as "lomo taxistas," or taxis of the lower back, across the border from Cucuta, Colombia, to Venezuela, Sept. 20, 2019.

Amid the screams of street vendors and the pedestrian mayhem, dozens of young men with metal carts hustle back and forth between the bus terminal and the border, carrying suitcases and merchandise. They are known as "lomo taxistas" — taxis of the lower back — because they spend much of the day hauling around heavy loads on their backs.

"I didn't expect to stay here, but I had to because I didn't have more money to continue my journey," said Ricardo Rocha, a lomo taxista from central Venezuela, who arrived in San Antonio last year.

Rocha said he makes around $8 a day hauling large sacks of goods around the San Antonio bus terminal, which is about four blocks from the border. It can be backbreaking work in extreme temperatures that often climb to 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit), but the 26-year-old says itis better than staying in his home state of Aragua.

"Food has become very unaffordable there," he said. "And it's also hard to get a job."

A man carries a load on his back as he works as a "lomo taxista," or taxi of the lower back, outside a bus terminal in San Antonio, Venezuela, Sept. 19, 2019.

Food shortages and hyperinflation in Venezuela are pushing thousands of people to leave the country each day in search of a better life.

But many who have little money to migrate, or prefer to stay closer to home, are settling in border towns like San Antonio, where the informal economy of black market goods and street vending provide them with some work opportunities.

San Antonio's mayor, William Gomez, says that over the past two years, the town's population has grown from 66,000 to 113,000 due to the wave of internal migration. He says the lomo taxistas are one of several informal occupations that have popped up as more people arrive from the interior of Venezuela.

"These are hard-working young men," said Gomez, who is from the Venezuela's governing socialist party. "With this type of work, they are finding some relief from the economic blockade that has been imposed on Venezuela."

At the bus terminal, Rocha blames Venezuela's government and its economic policies for the country's problems, saying that something "needs to change" so children don't have to face such hardships.

He lives with his two small children and his pregnant wife in a room that the family rents for $3 a day. Power outages are frequent, like elsewhere in Venezuela's border areas. Running water is available only once a week.

"It's uncomfortable, because we also have to share the bathroom with other families," said Francis Sosa, Rocha's 20-year-old wife. "But here we can eat well. We had our own home in Aragua but it was tough to find food there."

Rocha works every day from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. to earn enough to pay the rent, afford some food and have some money left over for his children's needs.

On his way home, he walks by stores that stopped selling clothes or electric appliances due to Venezuela's crisis. Now their owners rent those spaces to migrants from central Venezuela who sleep on the floor for a couple dollars a night.

Rocha sometimes wonders if life would be better in nearby countries like Colombia or Peru. But he is also discouraged from moving when he sees penniless Venezuelans coming back home with tales of suffering and hardships.

"It's hard for me to know what life abroad would be like," he said. "While there is work, I will stay around here."
