Ebola Treatment Center in Congo Reopens After Attack An Ebola treatment center located at the epicenter of the current outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has resumed operations after it was attacked last month, the country's health ministry said Saturday. The center run by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) in the district of Katwa was set on fire Feb. 24 by unknown attackers, forcing staff to evacuate patients. It reopened Saturday, the ministry said in a statement. "For now it is managed by the ministry in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF," it said, referring to the U.N. children's fund. Aid workers have faced mistrust in some areas as they seek to contain the Ebola outbreak, which has become the most severe in Congo's history. The WHO has said the distrust is fueled by false rumors about treatments and preference for traditional medicine. Another MSF center in Butembo was also attacked in late February but reopened a week later. MSF has pulled out from the area since the two attacks and has not said when it might resume medical activities. The current Ebola epidemic, first declared last August, is believed to have killed at least 561 people so far and infected over 300 more.

Agnes Varda, French New Wave Pioneer, Dies at 90 Agnes Varda, the French New Wave pioneer who for decades beguiled, challenged and charmed moviegoers in films that inspired generations of filmmakers, has died. She was 90. Varda's production company, Cine-Tamaris, said Varda died early morning Friday at her home in Paris from cancer. With a two-tone bowl haircut, the Belgian-born Varda was a spirited, diminutive figure who towered over more than a half century of moviemaking. Her first film, made at the age of 27, "La Pointe Courte," earned her the nickname Grandmother of the New Wave, even though she — the sole woman among the movement — was a contemporary of its participants, including Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Demy, whom she later married. A photographer-turned-filmmaker, Varda's films fluctuated between fiction and documentary, often blurring the line in between. Her 1962 breakthrough, "Cleo From 5 to 7," followed a glamorous woman (Corinne Marchand) in real time across Paris while she awaited results of a cancer exam. In her 2017 Oscar nominated road trip "Faces Places," she traversed the French countryside with the street artist JR, pasting giant images of people they encountered on building facades. "Life comes through the frame and through the stock. It's like a filter," Varda said in an interview in 2017. "I feel I am an artist but I am a movie maker. I make a film with my hands. I love the editing, I love the mixing. It's a tool to make other people exist. It's giving understanding between people." Varda worked almost right up to her death, releasing the scrapbook documentary "Varda by Agnes" earlier this year. She had originally intended her 2008 cinematic memoir "Beaches by Agnes" to be her swan song but, to her surprise, ended up with another decade of work. "I'm 90 and I don't care," she says into the camera in "Varda by Agnes." In 2015, Varda was given an honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2017, she was given an honorary Academy Award. But she was more content, she said, "in the margins." "I'm flattered," she said of the Oscar, "but not that much." Varda's films quickly became feminist landmarks and she a champion of women behind the camera. One of the only female filmmakers in France when she started, she led an insurgency that continued, in greater number, through her life. At the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, she helped preside over a protest for gender equality on the red carpet steps of the festival's central Palais with 81 other women. At the premiere of what she called her "feminist musical," "One Sings, the Other Doesn't," in 1977, she introduced "a film about women who were also people." Her "Vagabond," which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1985, followed a young female drifter (Sandrine Bonnaire) discovered dead in a freezing ditch. "When I started, my point was not to be a woman," said Varda. "I wanted to do radical cinema." Varda's death was immediately felt across the movie industry. The Cannes Film Festival said: "The place she occupied is irreplaceable. Agnes loved images, words and people. She's one of those whose youth will never fade." "Moonlight" filmmaker Barry Jenkins recalled a legend whose "life and work were undeniably fused." Arlette Varda was born in Brussels, Belgium on May 30, 1928 to a French mother and Greek father. Varda, who later changed her name to Agnes, started as a photographer after studying literature and arts. In 1951, she was appointed official photographer of the Theatre National Populaire, and remained in that position for the next decade. In 1954, well before Godard and Francois Truffaut became the emblematic figures of the New Wave, Varda's first movie, "La Pointe Courte," followed a couple going through a crisis in the small port of Sete on the Mediterranean coast. The movie was cut by Alain Resnais but was regarded as too radical at the time and only had a limited release. Varda contrasted the young couple's story with the local villagers' struggle to survive, eventually linking the two seemingly disparate ways of life. She deliberately used a real fishing village, wanting to give the film the look of a documentary. "I've always been using reality as a texture to understand better," she said. "I like for stories to look true." She made several documentary shorts, but inadequate funds prevented Varda from making her next feature, "Cleo From 5 to 7," until 1961. Backed by French businessman Georges de Beauregard, who had supported Jean-Luc Godard's "Breathless," the film studied Cleo's evolvement from a shallow pop star to an authentic human being capable of understanding pain in herself and others. "I obliged myself to follow the time. Ninety minutes, one after another. Real time and real geography," said Varda. "I filmed all the steps, all the streets. What she does, it could be retraced. I gave myself something difficult because inside the difficulty, I wanted to hear her heart beating." The widely hailed "Cleo" built anticipation for her next film, "Happiness," which won the Silver Bear award at the 1965 Berlin Festival. Varda married Demy, the "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" director, in 1962 and two were married until his death in 1990. They worked separately but alongside each other, regularly occupying opposite sides of the courtyard of their Paris home. The filmmaking couple also spent several years in Hollywood in the late `60s. Demy made "Model Shop" there while Varda befriended Jim Morrison of the Doors (she was one of just a handful of people to attend Morrison's 1971 funeral in Paris' Pere Lachais cemetery), filmed the Los Angeles-set "Lions Love" and interviewed the imprisoned Black Panther leader Huey Newton for the 1968 documentary "Black Panthers." She and Demy had two children together: Mathieu Demy and Rosalie Varda, who both found career in French filmmaking. Varda is survived by both. Demy's death fueled Varda's late period of documentaries, including several heartfelt tributes to her husband including 1991's "Jacquot de Nantes." "I had to stay alive even though he died. I made two films about him. Then I went off and I did cinema. Fiction films are beautiful but documentaries put you at peace with the world. You try to make the world understandable, make the people come near to you." One of those documentaries, the 2000 film "The Gleaners and I," is considered by some her masterwork. Documenting people who live off the garbage thrown out by others, it's a meditation on waste and reuse, art and death. "Filming, especially a documentary, is gleaning," Varda told IndieWire. "Because you pick what you find. You bend. You go around. You are curious."

Wikipedia for Educators at Fordham will be hosting a Poetry Edit-a-thon event on Friday, March 29, 2019 from 4pm to 8pm at Fordham's Lincoln Center campus.

This event is designed to increase the coverage of poets and noteable poems on Wikipedia, with a focus on women poets. The edit-a-thon will include tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, ongoing editing support, reference materials, refreshments, and a pizza reception following the event. This event is free and open to the public.  People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate.

10 Million Afghans Need Urgent Help After Floods, Drought An estimated 10 million people in Afghanistan, more than a quarter of its population, are facing "severe acute" food insecurity and are in need of urgent "life-saving" humanitarian assistance in the wake of recent floods and drought, warns an international relief agency. Three years of drought have contributed to massive crop failure, economic hardship, hunger and loss of life, and forced 266,000 people from their homes, said the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in a statement issued Thursday. In the outgoing month of March, it noted, extreme weather deepened extreme hardship, when above normal rain and snow fell on soil with limited vegetation or ability to soak up the water, bringing flash floods to nine provinces in Afghanistan. The calamity killed 63 people and displaced at least 281,000 to makeshift camps with inadequate services. Rising temperatures due to climate change are increasing the hardship for Afghans because they are leading to changes in snowmelt, and rainfall is getting more erratic, with an increased risk of floods and droughts in a country where repeated disasters and ongoing conflict have eroded the people's capacity to cope, the agency said. "The floods should be the wake-up call that triggers a massive investment to help people who at the moment are out of sight in an under-estimated, silent crisis with limited access by humanitarian agencies or media," said Ariel Kestens, IFRC country chief. "They are out of reach because of conflict and out of scope because this is a large, slow-onset disaster, and because many people in need are displaced by disaster," Kestens added. Aid workers note that across many parts of Afghanistan, people suffer from a lack of safe water, proper sanitation and healthcare, which contribute to catastrophic levels of malnutrition. The United States this week also announced more than $61 million in additional humanitarian assistance for providing emergency food assistance, nutrition services, hygiene kits, safe drinking water, access to latrines and protection for people in the worst affected Afghan regions. The U.S. has provided more than $293 million in financial relief to the crisis-hit country since the fiscal year 2018, making it the single largest donor of humanitarian assistance. Washington has recently also stepped up diplomatic efforts to seek a political settlement to the conflict with the Taliban. Afghan civilians continue to bear the brunt of the 18-year-old war that continues to kill and injure record numbers of civilians and displace tens of thousands of families.

Cady was a native of [[East Chatham, New York|East Chatham]], [[New York (state)|New York]], the oldest of three children of farmer Norman J. Cady. Her family was initially from [[Connecticut]], but migrated to [[Columbia County, New York|Columbia County]] in the middle of the eighteenth century. She was remembered by neighbors and family members as beautiful, strong-willed, and active; none remembered her artistic endeavors. Census records give her occupation as "housework". Cady remained unmarried throughout her life. After the deaths of her parents she moved in with a nephew; around 1920 she moved again, to [[Grass Lake, Michigan|Grass Lake]], [[Michigan]], where she lived with her sister and sister's family until dying.<ref name="Wertkin2004"></ref>

Cady's work is unusual, as theorem painting was long past its popularity when she began practicing the art.<ref name="auto"></ref> Her work was discovered in the 1930s by folk art collectors [[J. Stuart Halladay]] and [[Herrell George Thomas]], who assumed that she was another person of the same name who lived in [[New Lebanon, New York|New Lebanon]], New York around 1820, when theorem painting was at its most popular. Research performed in 1978 by [[Ruth Piwonka]] and Roderick H. Blackburn revealed her true identity. Four watercolors and one oil on canvas by the artist are known; two of the former are still-life depictions of glass compotes, while the other two are images of doves sitting on a branch.<ref name="Wertkin2004"/> One of these, produced for her brother and sister-in-law on the birth of their eldest son in 1890, is her only signed and dated work.<ref name="auto1"></ref> Cady was evidently a master of the theorem technique; besides using both transparent and opaque watercolor paints, she applied [[mica]] flecks to her depictions of glass and used a textured cloth to spread powder over her stencils, a technique known as "pouncing". Her works are considered among the finest examples of theorem painting known.<ref name="Wertkin2004"/> She is one of the few theorem artists known to have signed her work.<ref></ref>

One of Cady's still-life paintings, ''Fruit in Glass Compote'' of c. 1895, is in the collection of the [[American Folk Art Museum]], to which it was donated by [[Ralph Esmerian]].<ref name="auto"/> A nearly identical piece, dated c. 1890, is owned by the [[Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum]].<ref name="auto1"/>

Puff dough is rested in a warm place for 4 hours, then heated butter and after mixing well the remaining flour is added. <ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1"></ref>

Cumin is crushed and heated, then anise, cinnamon, salt and pepper are added together with warm butter for the stuffing. The mixture is cooked for 5 minutes. <ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" />

Dough is divided into 10 pieces. Rolled out pieces smeared with butter are placed on top of each other. The multilayered dough is cut into strips. The strips are twisted to make a round shape and then flattened. The dough is stuffed with the mixture and the top is coated with saffron, yolk and poppy seeds.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" />

After Devastating Floods, US Midwest Farms Need Funds to Recover Missouri farmer Richard Oswald needs a lot of help to recover from flooding that left his home and farm looking like a manmade island in an inland sea. Relief groups are giving tetanus shots and handing out free meals and cleaning supplies near his farm in the Langdon-Rock Port area, about 100 miles (161 km) northwest of Kansas City. But what Oswald really needs is money. Hit by the worst flooding in living memory, he and thousands of other farmers along the Missouri River will each require hundreds of thousands of dollars in disaster funds or loans to start over. "The typical response on flood relief is groups like the Red Cross show up with paper towels and rubber gloves and scrub buckets," said Oswald, 69, who does not expect to be able to get to his home or land for weeks. "The biggest thing farmers need is cash, or ways to access funds." 'Bounce Back' Slammed by a trade war and low commodity prices, Midwest family farms have been in the red and in decline for the last five years. The number of U.S farms fell by 100,000 between 2010 and 2017, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) data. Thousands more will now go under without emergency financial support for flooding, pummeling heartland economies almost entirely dependent on agriculture, farmers and aid groups said. It is a call federal and state agencies, as well as non-governmental and faith-based relief groups are answering. President Donald Trump has approved disaster declarations for Nebraska and Iowa, making federal disaster funding available in flood-hit areas. Missouri Governor Mike Parson declared a state of emergency, paving the way for similar actions in his state. "I know we aim for bringing everything back up to where it was," said Rosalynn Days-Austin, a USDA emergency coordinator helping direct Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) efforts in flood-affected areas. "Sometimes that's not always possible, for a variety of reasons, but the goal is definitely to help them bounce back from their loss." Cash Preferred Relief groups like Farm Aid are tending to the immediate needs of farmers, distributing tens of thousands of dollars in "emergency grants" - $500 gifts from cash donations that help families pay for things like groceries. After that, the group and its partners advise farming families on how to access federal disaster funds they hope are coming soon. "What we're hearing, because of the snowpack and rain and the wet ground, is that farmers are going to be dealing with this throughout the spring. So we're in it for the long haul," said Jennifer Fahy, a spokeswoman for the group established by country singer and activist Willie Nelson. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is coordinating a long-term response to get displaced families housed, navigate the red tape of insurance companies and federal agencies and tend to the mental health needs of people who have suffered extreme trauma, said Bishop Brian Maas. "We have national partners and coalitions within the state," said Maas, who is asking people to hold off donating more material goods, for now. "There will be stresses because we've not done anything of this magnitude. "Now we have mountains of cleaning supplies and so forth that can't be used," Maas said, appealing to people to get back in touch in a month to see how they can donate then. "Cash is the most flexible way to respond." 'FEMA is Worthless' Another immediate need is feed for livestock. Relief organization Farm Rescue is collecting donations of hay in the Dakotas and trucking it to farmers whose cattle are starving after their feed stands were submerged in floodwater. "I don't know of anything this widespread that has ever affected so many people in our service area," said Dan Erdmann, a spokesman for the group which helps family farms get through crises ranging from natural disasters to medical emergencies. Farm workers, some of them undocumented and legal migrants, have been hit hard. Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska is looking at housing assistance for displaced people who previously paid around $300 a month rent and now face rents triple that due to a dearth in properties, said Stacy Martin, chief executive of the social services charity. While relief groups tend to urgent needs, farmers like Scott Olson say more federal relief money is needed at a time when low crop prices and high debt levels are limiting farmers' access to credit. He is counting on a farm relief bill in Congress for extra disaster compensation after he successfully lobbied in Washington for similar funds following 2011 flooding. "Flood insurance isn't going to cover this worth a darn. FEMA is worthless," said Olson, who farms 3,000 acres near Tekamah, Nebraska and runs a farm equipment business. "They don't have any money, nobody has any money."

He moved to Vienna in 1726 and became a student of the [[court painter]], [[Jacob van Schuppen]], who had just become Director of the "Hofakademie der Maler, Bildhauer und Baukunst" (now the [[Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna|Academy of Fine Arts]]). A short time later, he continued his studies in [[Frankfurt]] with the Hungarian-born painter, .<ref name="D" />

In 1736, he married Anna Maria Canton, daughter of the painter Franz Canton (1678-1733).

He returned to Vienna around 1740. Soon after, his paintings began to rely more heavily on Dutch and French models; losing their previous originality. Later, He took over management of a genre painting class at the Academy and served as Rector from 1752 to 1754, when he resigned, following his wife's death.<ref name="D" />

Many of his works are in private collections, although they may also be seen at the [[Universalmuseum Joanneum]], the [[Belvedere]], the [[Brukenthal National Museum]] and the collections of the [[National Gallery in Prague]].

A street in the [[Hietzing]] district of Vienna is named after him.

He studied [[Italian language|Italian]] with Count Pietro Alety, a student of Dante, and then [[Latin language|Latin]] with Lorenzo Barili. He was appointed secretary of the Jewish community at Ancona, and later of that at [[Florence]], where he began translating Hebrew works into Italian.<ref></ref>

His works include: ''I Capitoli dei Padri, Trattato Misnico Morale con Commenti'', an Italian translation of Abot; ''I Doveri de' Cuori'' (Prato, 1847); ''Volgarizzamento del Libro di Job'' (Florence, 1874); ''Volgarizzamento delle Lamentazioni di Geremi''; and ''Il Salterio o Canti Nazionali del Popolo d'Israele Spiegati e Commentati'' (Florence, 1885). He was also the author of several shorter essays and poems, and published a translation of "The Duties of the Heart", an eleventh century moral treatise by Maestro Bechai originally written in Arabic and translated into Hebrew by [[Judah ben Saul ibn Tibbon|Judah ben Tibon]].<ref></ref>

His wife, Regine, published an Italian translation of the ''Enchiridion d'Egitto''. The composer and virtuoso [[Federico Consolo]] was his son.

Poll: Majority of Americans Favor Stricter Gun Laws A majority of Americans favor stricter gun laws, and most believe places of worship and schools have become less safe over the last two decades, according to a new poll conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The survey was conducted both before and after this month's mass shooting at two mosques in New Zealand. It found that 67 percent of Americans support making U.S. gun laws stricter, while 22 percent say they should be left as they are and 10 percent think they should be made less strict. The New Zealand shooting on March 15 did not appear to have an impact on Americans' support for new gun laws; support for tighter gun laws was the same in interviews conducted before and after the shooting. Wide partisan divide While a majority of Americans have consistently said they support stronger gun laws, proposals have stalled repeatedly in Congress in recent years, a marked contrast to New Zealand and some other countries, such as Australia, that have acted swiftly after a mass shooting. Less than a week after the mosque shootings, New Zealand moved to ban "military-style" semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines; similarly, after a mass shooting in 1996, Australia enacted sweeping gun bans within two weeks. The new poll suggests many Americans would support similar measures, but there's a wide gulf between Democrats and Republicans on banning specific types of guns. Overall, 6 in 10 Americans support a ban on AR-15 rifles and similar semiautomatic weapons. Roughly 8 in 10 Democrats, but just about 4 in 10 Republicans, support that policy. Republicans are also far less likely than Democrats to think that making it harder to buy a gun would prevent mass shootings, 36 percent to 81 percent. Overall, 58 percent of Americans think it would. Support across party lines Still, some gun restrictions get wide support across party lines. Wide shares of both Democrats and Republicans support a universal background check requirement, along with allowing courts to prevent some people from buying guns if they are considered dangerous to themselves or others, even if they have not committed crimes. In contrast to New Zealand, the United States has enacted few national restrictions in recent years. In part, that's a reflection of gun rights being enshrined in the U.S. Constitution; in a poll by the Pew Research Center in spring of 2017, 74 percent of gun owners said the right to own guns is essential to their own sense of freedom. That poll also found that gun owners were far more likely than those who don't own guns to contact public officials about gun policy or donate to organizations that take a stance on the issue. A divided Congress after last year's midterm elections only serves to make any new national gun laws unlikely for the foreseeable future. Support unchanged from 2018 Overall support for stricter gun laws is unchanged since an AP-NORC poll conducted one year ago, a month after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead. The post-Parkland poll marked an increase in support for stricter gun laws, from 61 percent in October 2017. But the strength of that support appears to have ebbed. The percentage who say gun laws should be made much stricter, rather than just somewhat stricter, drifted down slightly after reaching a peak in the post-Parkland poll, from 45 percent then to 39 percent now. The poll showed a wide share of Americans say safety in churches, synagogues, mosques and other places of worship has worsened over the past two decades. Sixty-one percent say religious houses have grown less safe over the last two decades. Slightly more said so after the New Zealand shooting than before, 64 percent to 57 percent. Nearly 7 in 10 believe elementary and high schools have become less safe than they used to be. And 57 percent say the same about colleges and universities.
