The Flesherton Advance is a weekly newspaper in Flesherton, Ontario

History
The Flesherton Advance began on June 1st, 1881 by A. R. Fawcett. Both himself and following publisher Thurston were born in Euphrasia Township, Fawcett born near Heathcote. His early connection with newspapers was as an apprentice at the Thornbury Standard. Fawcett was a member of the Artemesia Town Council, as well as being connected to the Osprey and Euphrasia Town Councils in the early and mid 1880s. He was also attended the Artemesia Agricultural Society Annual Meeting, was a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the Sons of Temperance and married twice. His first wife, Amelia Buchanan, passed on the 21st of February, 1885, and he remarried the next January to a Maggie Carberry of Chingacousy. By the summer of 1888 the town's population had doubled to 600, and Fawcett had sold the paper on August 1st to W. H. Thurston. After 50 years, the paper never carried less than twelve columns of advertising, the same as its first issue. The same week he parted ways with the Advance, he also sold the newspaper and job printing plant of the Streetsville Review. He went on to Streetsville, then Toronto, before settling in Burk's Falls and went on to publish the Burks' Falls Arrow, a publication that ran from 1885 to 1966. He passed on August 2nd, 1919.

A front page reprint of Fawcett's recollection of the first days of setting up the paper, sham battles in the town during Louis Riel's rebellion, and columns by the Thurstons can be found in the June 3rd, 1931 issue.

William Hadley Thurston was born in 1859, seven years after his family had relocated to Kimberly from Lindsay, his family (John M. Thurston and Adeline Purdy) being one of the first pioneers of Kimberly Valley. At the age of 17 Thurston began an apprenticeship in Orangeville for two years before heading to the Durham Review. He then spent time as a writer and typesetter with the Toronto Daily World/Globe and World, and as an editor of the Owen Sound Tribune, where he would write that the Flesherton Advance was "another candidate for the the poor house." Not the only newspaper man in his family, his brother Alfred D. would hold an executive position with the Montreal Gazette. Thurston would serve as the first clerk of the newly incorporated village in 1912, up to being elected Reeve in 1927. A philatelist, photographer, mushroom hunter and taxidermist, Thurston owned the first pneumatic bike in the district. On editors, Thurston once said, "To be a live editor, I believe, is to endanger friendships, but after all it is not true friendship which falls before honest criticism." On January 4th, 1884, Thurston married Kate Amelia Gaudin, with whom he would have four children with. He retired from the paper in the August 24th, 1938 issue and died January 25th, 1939, leaving the paper in the hands of his son, F. J. Thurston.

The Advance had a circulation of 1,000 for its 6 column, 8 page sheet in the early 1920s for a town of 500 persons. The paper historically served the communities of Priceville, Inistioge, Maxwell, Feversham, Eugenia, Vandeleur, Kimberly, Portlaw, Proton, Wodehouse, Maxwell, Rock Mills and Ceylon.

Frances James Thurston, born in 1901, first became involved with the paper from 1916 to 1919, leaving school to assist his father as many workers were overseas fighting. After leaving the paper he worked in the industry in Toronto and Winnipeg and returned to Flesherton in 1921, marrying Lillian Leoan White on January 11th, 1923. Running the paper from his father's retirement in 1938 until 1961, his brother A. S. Thurston also wrote a column for the paper. Frank would return as editor in April 1966 for two years after working on the Thornbury Review and the Alliston Herald. Frank passed away in 1987, leaving five sons.

The intervening five years had seen Royden Johnston as publisher from September 1961. Johnston was born in the early 1930s, arrived in town in 1946, and made the front page of the Advance for scholastic achievements and a run-in with some local deer. In the spring of 1966, the paper was being published by Godfrey Clark. This only lasted two years, when Walter Walls and wife Phylis purchased the paper and shifted production in tandem with the Dundalk Herald. The Walls family have been at the paper ever since then, Matthew Walls succeeding his parents, followed by Cathy Walls, the paper still publishing as of 2019.

UK's Johnson Says All Conservative Candidates Vowed to Back His Brexit Deal

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says all Conservative Party candidates in the upcoming election have pledged to back his Brexit deal.

"All 635 Conservative candidates standing at this election — every single one of them — has pledged to me that if elected they will vote in Parliament to pass my Brexit deal so we can end the uncertainty and finally leave the EU," Johnson told London's Telegraph newspaper in an interview published late on Saturday.

"I am offering a pact with the people: If you vote Conservative you can be 100% sure a majority Conservative government will unblock Parliament and get Brexit done," he said.

The December 12 election was called to end three years of disagreement over Brexit that has sapped investors' faith in the stability of the world's fifth-largest economy and damaged Britain's standing since it voted in a 2016 referendum to leave the European Union.

Johnson, 55, hopes to win a majority to push through the last-minute Brexit deal he struck with the EU last month after the bloc granted a third delay to the divorce that was originally supposed to take place March 29. Voters in a 2016 referendum narrowly voted in favor of leaving the EU.

Johnson's Conservatives lead Labour by sizable margins, four polls published Saturday show.

A YouGov poll showed support for the Conservatives at 45%, the highest level since 2017, compared with Labour at 28%, unchanged. The pro-European Union Liberal Democrats were at 15%, and the Brexit Party was at 4%, unchanged.

A separate poll for SavantaComRes also said support for the Conservatives was the highest since 2017, at 41%. Labour's support was at 33%.

The Conservatives have a 16-point lead over Labour, according to an opinion poll published by Opinium Research, and a poll by the Mail on Sunday said Johnson's party had a 15-point lead over Labour.

List of drug prices

Drug prices are established mostly by the Big Pharma companies in America and Europe, and those prices are transmitted, when they manage to do so, to other countries.

Overview
Drug prices are established mostly by the Big Pharma companies in America and Europe, and those prices are transmitted, when they manage to do so, to other countries. New drugs for hepatitis C, monoclonal antibodies used in cancer therapy or new inhibitors of kinases also used for cancer treatment, are examples of very expensive drugs.

Some societies like the American College of Cardiology (ACC), Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER) try to evaluate what they call "the real value of a drug". They elaborate tables comparing quality of life and survival years added when a drug is used, and check if the price of the drug correlates with those measures.

Cancer treatment is getting more and more expensive and this trend does not show any evidence of abating, causing distress for patients. The national health system of Great Britain has an organ to decide which drugs the system will have and, consequently, which drugs patients shall receive. Very expensive monoclonal antibodies, for instance, are available in Great Britain, but they are not available in the public system, in which other medicines are offered without cost to the patients.

Big Pharma companies justify the new drug prices increase for paying research and developing of medicines. Drug market is not exactly an open market with lots of concurring actors; there are monopolies and duopolies on many drugs. Investing resources and research in new drug research is partly true, but not the whole history: most of new drugs are discovered and tested in phases 1 and 2 at small firms or universities, and Big Pharma gobbles the most promising of them. We do not know the real costs of drug development, as Big Pharma does not furnish their data, but it is possible to suppose that there is a sizable interest on those costs. One recent example of Big Pharma social conscience was Daraprim®. This old drug was about US$13.00 per pill and when one a Big Pharma bought the manufacture, the price changed for around US$700,00 per pill… in an old, venerable drug that has been in the market for years…

Ninja-Myanmar relation refers to the international relations between Ninja, Japanese covert agent and Myanmar, previously called Burma. Despite the fact that there is no evidence of traditional ninja existence in Burma, "ninja in Burma" has been depicted in popular culture due to the close relationship between Japanese secret agency and Burmese revolutionaries during World War II.

History
In 1941, thirty Burmese independent activists supported by Japanese empire received military training by special intelligence unit called . Minami Kikan was mainly composed of the graduates of Nakano School where Fujita Seiko, "The last ninja" taught Kōga-ryū ninjutsu in the early days of the school. Among the Burmese, four men (Ne Win, Yan Naing, Zeya, and Kyaw Zaw) were chosen to specialize in field command, sabotage and guerrilla warfare possibly including the method of ninja.
It was among a few rare cases that foreign soldiers were trained by Nakano graduates along with Russians traned by Japanese secret military agancy in Harbin.

Werner W. Wittmann

Sciencia58: new article

Werner W. Wittmann (* January 11th 1944 in Eger) is a German psychologist, evaluation researcher and research methodologist.

Biography
Werner W. Wittmann grew up in Nuremberg, where he completed his Abitur in 1964. He studied psychology at the University of Freiburg (Diploma degree 1972) and received his doctorate in 1977 with a thesis on factor-analytical models, methodological studies and problems of reproducibility. In his habilitation in 1984, he dealt with the topic of evaluation research, which was published in 1985 as a book by Springer-Verlag. From 1973 to 1984 Werner W. Wittmann was a scientific assistant at the Psychological Institute of the University of Freiburg at the chair of Personality Psychology (Jochen Fahrenberg), where he was appointed to a temporary professorship with a focus on methodology in 1984. From 1988 to 1993 he was a C2 professor at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and from 1993 to his retirement in 2009 he held the chair of Psychology II, Methods, Diagnostics and Evaluation at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Mannheim. His interest in collaborative research projects, teaching and international exchange led to several visiting professorships, among others at the universities Heidelberg, Berlin. (FU), Bern, Fribourg (Switzerland), Vienna and San Diego (SDSU). From 2006 to 2009 Werner Wittmann was head of the Otto-Selz-Institute at the University of Mannheim and subsequently became head of a department for evaluation, diagnostics and methods at the same institute. Werner W. Wittmann is/was member of the editorial board of several scientific journals, among others. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, Zeitschrift für Personalpsychologie, Diagnostica, Applied Measurement und Praxis Klinische Verhaltensmedizin und Rehabilitation.

Research
At the centre of Werner Wittmann's work is an attempt to unite the sometimes contradictory methods and goals of experimental and non-experimental research approaches in the social and behavioural sciences. His work is based on works by Lee Cronbach, Donald T. Campbell, Thomas D. Cook, R.F. Boruch, Egon Brunswik, L. Sechrest, Gene V. Glass, Raymond Bernard Cattell and Kenneth Hammond.

The central focus of Werner Wittmann's research and scientific theory is on considerations of a multivariate reliabilitys and validity theory (esp. Wittmann, 1985, 1988). It was proposed as a possible solution to the general covariation problem described by Jochen Fahrenberg (Fahrenberg, 1982) of the multi-method approach in psychological diagnostics (so-called Multitrait-Multimethod-MTMM-Approach). The core is the model of the 4, later 5 data boxes (Five-Box-Model, Wittmann, 1990), a model for the conception, execution and evaluation of evaluation studies, which was mainly used in rehabilitation and intelligence research. It is based on Cattell's data box BDRM Basic Data Relation Matrix (Raymond Cattell, 1966) and Brunswik's lens model (Brunswik, 1956). In addition to the five related data boxes, the main determinants are the symmetry principle and the principle of data aggregation.

Werner Wittmann's integrative thinking made him a pioneer of evaluation research in Germany, opened up new perspectives for solving fundamental challenges of translational research methodology, and made him a pioneer of evidence-based decisions in health care. In recognition of his contributions to evaluation research, Werner Wittmann received the 2005 F. Lazarsfeld Award for Evaluation Theory from the American Evaluation Association. The troop also played at the just opened about which Franz Carl Weidmann wrote:

On 4 February 1791 Demmer and his wife came to the court theatre in Weimar, Curiously, his brother Christian Demmer played the same role - at the same time in a production of the Theater am Kärntnertor. Ignaz Franz Castelli writes in his memoirs:

AP-NORC/USA Facts Poll: Americans Struggle to Identify True Facts

In a sharply divided country, here is something many Americans agree on: It's hard to know what's a true and honest fact.

A new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and USAFacts finds that regardless of political belief, many Americans say they have a hard time figuring out if information is true. Nearly two-thirds of Americans say they often come across one-sided information and about 6 in 10 say they regularly see conflicting reports about the same set of facts from different sources.

"It is difficult to get facts. You have to read between the lines. You have to have a lot of common sense," said Leah Williams, 29, of Modesto, California. A Republican, Williams says she relies on like-minded friends and family to help sort through conflicting information. "There are wolves in sheep's clothing everywhere."

The poll found that 47% of Americans believe it's difficult to know if the information they encounter is true, compared with 31% who find it easy to do so. When deciding whether something is factual, there is widespread consensus on the importance of transparency in how the information was gathered and if it is based on data. While Democrats and Republicans alike frequently find the process challenging, USAFacts founder Steve Ballmer said he's still optimistic about the poll's findings.

"Americans want to know the facts," said Ballmer, the former chief executive at Microsoft. "Facts (are) a driver of decision making, of common discussion and common dialog."

But as a president with a history of making false statements and repeating debunked conspiracy theories faces public hearings this week in only the fourth impeachment inquiry in the nation's history, the poll finds that differing political beliefs led Americans down different paths as they try to determine what's an unquestionable fact.

Democrats are more likely to say they rely on scientists and academics, while Republicans are more likely to trust what they hear from President Donald Trump.

"When I hear him on Fox News — that's where I get all my information," said Al Corra, a 48-year-old Republican from Midland, Texas. Trump, he said, is the easiest way to cut through an otherwise confusing information environment.

Republicans are more likely than Democrats to put a great deal of trust in the president's statements, 40% to 5%. Overall, a majority of Americans (61%) have little to no trust in information about the government when it comes from Trump.

Corra said he distrusts academics as too "liberal" and he's not alone in that regard among Republicans. More Democrats than Republicans say they consider something to be factual if it's been verified by scientists — 72% versus 40% — as well as academics — 57% versus 30%.

Scott Austin, a Democrat from Aurora, Colorado, says he generally trusts scientists, but checks their affiliations carefully because he believes fraudulent information abounds. "If I see something that some scientist from Stanford says, I'll believe that because it's Stanford," he said.

Austin, a 52-year-old Army veteran, says he has to ping-pong from website to website to try to verify facts and has found himself increasingly skeptical of government information. Like 54% of Americans, he believes the president has a lot of sway over the information distributed by the government, and that's made him increasingly skeptical given his lack of trust in what Trump says to be true.

"I never had a problem trusting the government under Democratic or Republican administrations — until this administration," Austin said.

Close to half of Americans — 45% — also think members of Congress have a lot of influence on information that comes from the government, while just 3 in 10 say the same of federal agency employees.

Ballmer said it's actually those federal employees who should be trusted most to deliver facts in which the country can be confident.

"These people don't change with administrations," he said. "They publish the data as they collect it. I might add that computer systems are nonpartisan. They rake in data and they put it out. And that's what's happening at these government agencies."

When it comes to assessing whether information is factual, at least three-quarters of Americans think it's very important for it to be accurate, and that sources provide all relevant information and explain the way that information was gathered. Smaller majorities say the information should include opposing viewpoints and be devoid of opinion.

About 6 in 10 say they are very likely to consider information factual if it is based on data.

Many Americans say they rely on government websites, as well as news sources and social media, to get information. In total, 54% say they get information about the government from social media at least once a day, 52% say that about local TV news, 50% from national TV news networks and 47% from cable news. About 6 in 10 also say they have used government websites to look up information.

And yet, poll found widespread skepticism about these sources — majorities say they have little to no confidence in information they get about the government from social media, the president, members of Congress and businesses.

Lynn Joseph, a retired artist in Las Vegas, tries to ferret information out on the internet, but is skeptical of just about all sources nowadays. "Do I trust anybody? No," she said. "My philosophy is everybody's guilty until proven innocent."

Joseph, a Republican, is among the modest group of Trump supporters who don't trust the accuracy of his statements. Overall, about a third of those who approve of the president say they trust information they get from him about the government only a moderate amount, and roughly another quarter say they have little to no trust.

"I'm a Trump supporter, but I know about him," she said. "He speaks before he should."

Ex-IAEA Official: Iran's Apparent Explanation for Uranium at Tehran Site is Dubious

A former IAEA official says diplomats working with the U.N. nuclear agency do not believe Iran's apparent explanation for the presence of manmade uranium particles at a site in southern Tehran.

In a report published Monday, the IAEA said its inspectors monitoring Iranian compliance with commitments to curb potential weapons-related nuclear activities had "detected natural uranium particles of anthropogenic (manmade) origin at a location in Iran not declared to the agency." The report, initially provided to IAEA member nations and later leaked to the media, did not identify the location of the particles or provide any other details about them.

Olli Heinonen, deputy director of the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), speaks with Javad Vaeedi (L), Iran's…
FILE - Olli Heinonen, deputy director of the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency, speaks with Javad Vaeedi, left, Iran's deputy nuclear negotiator in Tehran, Oct. 29, 2007.

In an interview with VOA Persian, former IAEA Deputy Director General Ollie Heinonen said diplomats of multiple countries working with the IAEA told him that the agency's inspectors found the uranium particles at a southern Tehran site previously identified by Israel as the location of an alleged secret nuclear warehouse.

Heinonen, a nonproliferation analyst at the Washington-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said the diplomats gleaned the location of the particles from a Nov. 7 closed-door briefing in which IAEA Acting Director General Cornel Feruta discussed the report's findings with the agency's board of governors. The diplomats with whom Heinonen spoke were not Israelis, he added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu first identified the compound in Tehran's Turquzabad district in a September 2018 speech to the United Nations, calling it a "secret atomic warehouse for storing massive amounts of equipment and materiel from Iran's secret nuclear weapons program."

Iran, which insists its nuclear program always has been peaceful, denied the Israeli allegation and described Turquzabad site as private property. Israel has called on the international community to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons because of Iranian leaders' repeated threats to destroy the Jewish state.

Heinonen cited his diplomatic sources as saying Iran told the IAEA that the uranium particles found by the inspectors at the Turquzabad compound were a contamination from scrapped equipment used at the Gchine uranium mine and mill near the southern port city of Bandar Abbas. Iran previously has declared to the IAEA that the Gchine site produces yellowcake, a refined form of raw uranium ore mined from the Earth's crust.

International Atomic Energy Agency acting head Cornel Feruta addresses the media during a board of governors meeting at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Sept. 9, 2019.

Yellowcake can be further processed into enriched uranium to make fuel for nuclear power plants, Iran's stated aim. It also can be refined to a high degree to provide material for nuclear bombs.

Heinonen said his sources dismissed Iran's apparent explanation that equipment from the Gchine mine and mill was the source of the uranium particles at Turquzabad.

"The diplomats told me the IAEA Secretariat described the particles as having been converted from raw uranium without specifying their exact chemical form," Heinonen said. "They said these particles were not from yellowcake but from something more refined."

Neither the IAEA nor Iran have disclosed the nature of Iranian responses to IAEA questions about the uranium particles found by IAEA inspectors.

The IAEA did not respond to a VOA Persian request for comment about its communications with Iran. In its Nov. 11 report, the IAEA said: "It is essential for Iran to continue interactions with the agency to resolve this matter as soon as possible. On-going interactions … relating to Iran's implementation of its Safeguards Agreement and Additional Protocol require full and timely cooperation by Iran."

Israeli officials already had disclosed some of what Heinonen said he heard from his diplomatic sources about the uranium particles.

In a separate Nov. 7 briefing that followed the IAEA's closed-door meeting on that date, unnamed Israeli security and intelligence officials told Western news agencies that IAEA inspectors found uranium particles in samples collected at the Turquzabad compound earlier this year.

The Israeli officials said the Turquzabad particles not only came from converted uranium that was not enriched, but also had characteristics that did not match any nuclear site previously disclosed by Iran. By contrast, Heinonen's diplomatic sources only ruled out the Gchine mine and mill as a source of the particles. There was no word on how the Israeli officials reached their broader conclusion about the particles, a conclusion that pointed to their origin as being a secret Iranian nuclear conversion facility.

A spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) appeared to confirm the Israeli assertion about the location of the uranium particles in remarks to reporters on Nov. 9, two days before the IAEA published its report revealing the discovery of those particles at an undeclared Iranian nuclear site.

Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran speaks during news conference in Tehran, Iran…
FILE - Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran speaks during news conference in Tehran, Sept. 7, 2019.

Iranian state news agency ISNA quoted Behrouz Kamalvandi as saying there was "not a high degree" of nuclear "contamination" at Turquzabad. "Particles can fly and land anywhere," he said, adding that such particles can be found in any country where IAEA inspectors operate. "It is not an important issue and is completely solvable," Kamalvandi added.

Russia, an economic partner and military ally of Iran, also has tried to downplay the issue of the uranium particles. In a Wednesday report, Russia's state-run Sputnik news agency cited Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as warning against "political hysteria" regarding uranium particles being found at an undeclared site in Iran.

But the United States, Israel's top ally, said the IAEA's Nov. 7 meeting about Iran raised issues that were "deeply troubling." In a Nov. 8 statement, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said: "Iran has no plausible explanation for the detected (nuclear) materials and must explain where these nuclear materials came from and where they are now."

The IAEA has said Iran had an active program to develop a nuclear weapon until the end of 2003 and continued some related activities until as late as 2009. Israel has said documents it stole from a purported Iranian nuclear archive in Tehran in January 2018 show that Iran kept the option of restarting a nuclear weapons program in the future.

Iran has challenged the authenticity of those documents. Israel's critics also have said there is no evidence of Iran engaging in weapons-related nuclear work since its 2015 deal with world powers to curtail sensitive Iranian nuclear activities in return for international sanctions relief. U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from that deal last year, saying it did not do enough to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and engaging in other malign behaviors.

This article originated in VOA's Persian Service.
