'''Wiktor Steffen''' (27 September 1903 – 29 April 1997) was a professor of classical philology and Hellenist at [[Wrocław University of Science and Technology]] and at [[Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań]].

Steffen was born in 1903 in [[Sząbruk]], [[Poland]]. From 1924 to 1927, he studied classical philology at [[Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań]] where he later began his academic career. After obtaining his PhD in [[philology]] in 1931 and doing [[habilitation]] in classical philology in 1934, Steffen became a teacher in various high schools throughout Poland. He served as such from 1930 to 1939, until the onslaught of the [[World War II|Second World War]]. During the war, Steffen was a [[Prisoner of War|POW]] in Germany, bud despite it, survived the war by working as an underground teacher.<ref name=uw></ref>

Following the end of the war, he went to a newly liberated [[Pomerania]] where he taught at New Town's middle and high school. He returned to University of Poznań and joined its Department of Classical Philology, serving as an assistant professor from 1945 to 1949. In 1946, Steffen also became a teacher and contract professor at Wrocław University of Science and Technology and in 149, after accepting associate professor position, moved from Poznań to Wrocław. While there, he became a founder of the Institute of Classical Philology of the University of Wrocław and after becoming full professor, returned to Poznań in 1958, at the university of which he continued to work until his retirement in 1973.<ref name=uw/>

Prior to his retirement, Steffen also served as the head of the Department of Classical Philology at the [[University of Leipzig]] from 1961 to 1963. As a Hellenist, Steffen was specializing in Hellenic poetry as well as Greek satire, drama, tragedy, and comedy of that period. He was a member of various societies among which were; the Polish Philological Society, the Wrocław Scientific Society, the [[Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities]], the [[Polish Academy of Sciences]], the [[Poznań Society of Friends of Learning]], and the Scientific Society of the Catholic University of Lublin.<ref name=uw/>
