== Biography ==
Christie was the daughter of Elizabeth Hastie Smith and Dugald Christie, both Scottish. Elizabeth May was born in China. Her father, who was a doctor, had been sent to what is now [[Shenyang]] in the north-east of China as a missionary, and had opened a clinic at Shengjing.<ref>The clinic became a hospital. On 19 November 1912, Dugald Christie was responsible for the opening of Mukden Medical College</ref>
