== Early life and education ==
Dr Margaret Scott Wright was born in 1923 and went to school at the [[Wallington High School for Girls]]. She completed a graduate degree in art history at the [[University of Edinburgh]] in 1946. Scott-Wright then enrolled at St George's Hospital of Nursing in London where she completed a certification in [[midwifery]]. She was awarded a Boots Scholarship to undertake a [[Doctor of Philosophy]] (PhD) from the [[University of Edinburgh]] which she gained in 1961 for a thesis entitled "A study of the performance of student nurses in relation to a new method of training with special reference to the evaluation of an experimental course of basic nursing education being conducted in Scotland".<ref>Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)</ref> Later, she obtained a Post Graduate [[World Health Organization]] Diploma in Medical Services Administration from the [[University of Edinburgh]].

Scott-Wright succeeded [[Elsie Stephenson]] as director of [[Nursing Studies, University of Edinburgh|Nursing Studies]] at the [[University of Edinburgh]].<ref>Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (10 for 1)</ref> In 1971, she became the first Professor in Nursing Studies in Europe.<ref>Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)</ref> She was a member of the influential Briggs committee, set up by the government of the United Kingdom in the early 1970s to review the role of nurses and midwives in hospitals and in the community. The report of this committee recommended better degree preparation for nurses in order to "''recruit people with innovative flair and leadership qualities''".<ref>Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)</ref>
Scott-Wright took up a position as Dean and Professor of Nursing Studies at the [[University of Calgary]] from 1979-1986.<ref>Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)</ref> She held temporary appointments with the [[World Health Organization]] in Finland, Geneva, Copenhagen, Poland, Berne and Washington, DC and at [[The Hague Institute for Global Justice|The Hague]].
