Susannah Israel (1954-present) is a contemporary figurative ceramic artist from the San Francisco Bay Area . Born in 1954 in New York City, NY, she has been residing in the Bay Area since the early 1980's. Her recognizable figures are highly expressive, and serve as visual extension of her critical and allegorical narratives.

Personal Life
Israel met her husband, a scientist and composer named Ted King (Philadelphia, Pn 1945-2001) in the early 70's, and the two had a daughter together. In 1976, the couple and their two daughters moved to San Francisco, later moving to the Vulcan Foundry Studios, a labyrinthine warehouse complex for artists in Oakland, California. During the years 2000 and 2001 Israel suffered personally as she watched both her mother, and her husband die from cancer. After taking a sabbatical from her art, Israel eventually returned with sculptures that are deeply reflective, and even richer with layered narrative than before.

Education
Israel graduated from a high school in the small village of Wappingers Falls, New York where she was awarded the Regents Honors Scholarship to Pratt Art Institute in New York City in 1972. In 1980, the artist completed the paramedic/EMT program at San Francisco General Hospital, and became one of the first three women paramedics in the City and County of San Francisco. From 1983-1987, Israel attended San Francisco State University earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art & Chemistry. She returned in 1997 to acquire a Master's degree in Art in 2000. While there, she studied with (among others) Stephen de Staebler, Joe Hawley, Candace Crockett, Paul Pratchenko, David Kuraoka, Paula Levine and Kathleen Hanna.

Teaching Career
In the early 1970's, Israel began teaching art and ceramics. She created a ceramic arts program at the Cleveland Friends School, in Cleveland, Ohio, and taught there from 1973-1974.  After moving to San Francisco in 1976, she worked with the Rainbow Collective Childcare Group, teaching art to children at Honey Sandwich.

In 2000, Israel became the full-time Sculpture and Ceramics teacher at California State University, Bakersfield. From 2001- the present, she has taught Ceramics at Merritt College, and Laney College, and worked at the Contra Costa Colleges from 2002-2011.

Fellowships,  Residencies, and Collectives
Israel was part of Ruby's Clay Studio Collective in San Francisco from 1987-90, and was then selected as artist in residence by Daly City to work at the Doelger Art Center from 1990-95. There she was given access to a large studio, allowing her to push the direction and possibilities for her clay sculpture.  The artist has received much critical attention and support from the art world in the way of awards, grants, and exhibitions from patrons like the Virginia Groot Foundation, the Korean Embassy Art Program in Los Angeles, The Archie Bray Foundation, and the prestigious International Fletcher Challenge Premier Award. Her work can be found in catalogs and collections from around the world.
