Archaeological museum-reserve "Tanais"
Psyduck3:
Archaeological museum-reserve Tanais is one of the largest historical and archaeological museums-reserves in Russia.
Tanais is the first archeological museum-reserve created in Russia. The museum is based on the sites of the ancient city of Tanais. The city, named after the river Tanais (Don), was founded in its mouth at the confluence of Meotida (Azov Sea). The city of Tanais has played a significant role in the political and life of the cities of the Northern Black Sea region and the adjacent areas of the Great Steppe for almost eight centuries.
History
In 1955, the Academy of Sciences of the USSR formed the Lower-Don archaeological expedition, which, together with the Rostov University and the Rostov Museum of Local History, led by D.B. Shelova, began a scientific study of the site of the ancient settlement Tanais.
A little later, it was the head of the Lower-Don expedition, DB Shelov, and deputy director of the Rostov Regional Museum of Local History, SMMarkov, who initiated the creation of a museum-preserve.
In 1958, the Rostov Regional Executive Committee issued a resolution "On the establishment of the Tanais Museum-Reserve as a branch of the Rostov Regional Museum of Local History."
In 1960, the museum-reserve was handed over for permanent use to the land with the main square of the ancient settlement and the adjacent sections of the necropolis.
The construction of the first buildings of the museum on the basis of panel structures was started: museum exposition, administration and two small subsidiary premises. Then in the staff of the museum there were only two staff units (the manager and the watchman). On August 1, 1961 the museum was opened and accepted the first visitors.
In 1981, the Rostov Oblast Executive Committee approved in its decision the conservation zones of the reserve with an area of 1,200 hectares. In 1990 the museum-reserve became an independent cultural institution.
Currently, about 40 people work in the reserve. A new museum building was built on its territory with the main historical exposition, the building of the storage facility, administrative rooms, buildings for stationary and temporary exhibitions, museum and pedagogical occupations, technical services.
At present, as a result of excavations, about a tenth of the ancient city, as well as the main territory of the urban necropolis, has been discovered. Attention visitors are offered unparalleled reference stock collections and an "open-air" exposition, which includes lapidarium and large-scale reconstruction of ancient buildings at the museum estate (mock-up of Tanais fortifications, Roman bridge, Meot hut, Polovtsian sanctuary).
In the museum funds currently number more than 140 thousand units. A unique uniqueness is the "Hall of amphora standards", which is the only experience of open storage of amphora packets in Europe.
The reserve is an important cultural, educational and scientific center of the region, which is known far beyond its borders.
The Nizhne-Don archaeological expedition, which since 1993 acquired the status of the international (detachments of the German Institute of Archeology and the Institute of Archeology of the University of Warsaw), continues to make the greatest contribution to the establishment and development of the museum-reserve.
