Myanmar–Turkey relations
Abdelkader123456: Turkey and Myanmar have little connection until the Rohingya conflict occurred. But, when the Rohingya situation has become phenomenon in the Muslim world, Turkey has gone even further, causing an unwanted fight with Myanmar. Right now, their relations, while rare information, can be described as "no good"...
Bilateral relations between the Republic of Turkey and Republic of the Union of Myanmar had just been new at 20th century, although the Turkic Muslim traders had traveled to Southeast Asia. Myanmar does have a consulate in Ankara, but Turkey has a full embassy in Yangon.
History and modern relations
Historically, the medieval Burmese kingdoms like the Taungoo and Konbaung were hostile against Muslims, included the Turks. The Ottoman Empire, on one side, didn't have much contact with Burma unlike Siam, Malay and Javanese kingdoms. The awkward relations continued even after Burma was colonized by Britain.
At 1948, Burma obtained independence from the United Kingdom and Burma established relations with Turkey soon afterward, but lack of common interests and instability in Burma, with repeated junta rules in the country had closed Burma to the world. Turkey, on most part, began increasing its relations with ASEAN members like Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines and Malaysia, but Burma had never been its option. Trade between two nations is also insignificant.
Rohingya crisis
But what determined the relationship between Myanmar and Turkey is the Rohingya question, which has a negative impact on the relations between Turkey and Myanmar. According from Burmese Government, the Rohingya people are not considered to be natives but rather, Bengali immigrants from Bangladesh, which provoked a strong Burmanophobic sentiment in the Muslim world including Turkey. In 2017, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Turkish Republic, labelled the persecution of Rohingya in Myanmar by the Tatmadaw as "genocide", an allegation soon denied by Naypyidaw. Turkish First Lady, Emine Erdoğan, immediately visited Rakhine State. Her visit to Rakhine was described as "tearful" as she looked upon the disastrous conditions of the Rohingya refugees.
Turkey has also become the largest aid donors for Rohingya refugees. Turkey had "one of the highest, if not the highest," pledge at the donor conference, William Lacy Swing, head of the U.N.'s International Organization for Migration, told Anadolu Agency at the conference amidst Rohingya crisis. According from Anadolu Agency, Turkey has provided more than $10 million in humanitarian aid to Rohingya refugees in southeastern Bangladesh in 2018.
In response, Burmese Government accused Turkey of 'misleading information' and jeopardizing the truth. Both the Myanmar government and military have condemned and complained about the Turkish deputy prime minister, Mehmet Şimşek, for his misinforming tweet on the massacre against the Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State.
