Leitrim (County Galway barony)

Laurel Lodged:

Leitrim (Irish: Liatroim) is a barony in the extreme south-east of County Galway, Ireland. It is bounded, on the north, by the barony of Kilconnell; on the north-east by the barony of Longford; on the east by Lough Derg; on the west by the barony of Loughrea; and to the north-west by the baronry of Athenry. It is 20 miles in length from north to south and is 9.5 miles in breadth. To the south lies a barony of the same name in County Clare. By the terms of the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898, land from the Galway barony was allocated to the newly created Clare barony. This effected a restitution to Clare of a part of the ancient Kingdom of Thomond.

Settlements in the barony include Caherakilleen, Mountshannon, Tynagh and Whitegate.

Legal context
Baronies were created after the Norman invasion of Ireland as subdivisions of counties and were used for administration. While baronies continue to be officially defined units, they have been administratively obsolete since 1898. However, they continue to be used in land registration and specification such as in planning permissions. In many cases, a barony corresponds to an earlier Gaelic túath which had submitted to the Crown.

Civil parishes
There are 10 civil parishes in the barony.
* Ballynakill
* Kilcooly
* Kilmeen (Also partly in the barony of Loughrea)
* Killoran (Also partly in the baronies of Clonmacnowen and Longford)
* Kilreekill
* Kilteskill
* Duniry (Also partly in the barony of Longford)
* Leitrim
* Abbeygormacan
* Tynagh

Two parishes, Clonrush and Inishcaltra were transferred from the barony in 1898 to the newly created barony of the same name - Leitrim.

Physical geography
The highest peak in the barony is the Scalp (380m), part of the Slieve Aughty range. Lough Derg forms the barony's eastern boundary. Three rivers flow in an easterly direction to the Lough; from north to south they are the Cappagh, the Woodford and the Coos. The mines at Tynagh were a source of lead and zinc from the 1960s until their closure in 1981.

The R353 regional road bisects the barony from east to west. At the northern end is the N65 national road.
