Very Rev Dr '''James Henderson''' DD (1797–1874) was a 19th century Scottish minister of the Free Church of Scotland who served as [[Moderator of the General Assembly]] to the Free Church 1855/56.

He was born in [[Kelso, Scottish Borders|Kelso]] in 1797. He studied Divinity at [[Edinburgh University]] and was ordained by the [[Church of Scotland]] at [[Berwick-upon-Tweed]] in 1821. In 1823 he translated to St Bernards Church in [[Stockbridge, Edinburgh]] and in 1826 translated to [[Ratho]] Kirk. He lived in Ratho manse.<ref>Ewings Annals of the Free Church</ref>
In 1832 he moved to St Enoch's Church in [[Glasgow]]. He was then living at 29 Bath Street.<ref>Glasgow Post Office Directory 1840</ref>
In the [[Disruption of 1843]] he left the Church of Scotland and joined the Free Church of Scotland. A St Enoch's Free Church was built on Waterloo Street in Glasgow.<ref>Buildings of Scotland: Glasgow</ref>
In 1855 he succeeded [[James Grierson (minister)|Rev James Grierson]] as [[Moderator of the General Assembly]] the highest position in the church. In 1856 he was succeeded in turn by [[Thomas M'Crie the Younger|Rev Thomas M'Crie]].<ref>Ewings Annals of the Free Church</ref>
He died in [[North Berwick]] on 12 September 1874.<ref>Free Church Monthly January 1875</ref>
After his death St Enochs Free Church was known as the Melville Church after its next minister Rev Melville.
