Membean first uses an ''evaluation test'' to see where the student is in vocabulary. Depending on how they excel in the evaluation will determine which level and what kinds of words they get. After the evaluation is completed and the vocabulary is set up, Membean will then give the student words to learn one by one.
Before receiving questions to answer, Membean will give the student a passage to read with context clues to find out what the new word means. There will then be three different answer choices (two wrong answers and one correct answer). Getting the right answer will result in the next question asking the student to spell the word out. If the spelling is wrong, it will show the correct answer. After this process, different and a larger variety of questions are asked. Getting a question correct will result in a move-on to the next question, while getting one wrong will cause the student to recite the word's definition again.
Since Membean is primarily used in class, tests are also available for issue.<ref></ref>

Membean levels are the levels that determine the student's vocabulary level. As more questions are answered correctly, less words appear in the level the student is on. Normally, the old words disappear after a test is taken on them. Once there are no more words to learn in a certain level, the student is moved on to the next level.
There are five levels in total and as levels get higher, words get tougher and questions become more complex.
