George Sheidley was a Kansas City businessman who worked in the cattle trade. He was born in Maretta, Pa., in 1833, and started his livestock business with his brothers in 1871 in Southwest Texas.<ref name=":0"></ref> When the company moved to Kansas City, it operated under the name Sheidley Cattle Company. George also invested extensively in real estate after moving to Kansas City. He held stock in the Kansas City Cable Company, and was part owner of an original [[Streetcars in Kansas City|Kansas City Streetcar]].<ref name=":0" /> Sheidley died of a stroke in 1896.

== Kansas City Giving ==
Sheidley made the initial contribution to the Kansas City Public Library for purchasing books.<ref>Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)</ref> He made a $25,000 in five $5,000 increments; he initiated this gift in the same year his health started failing and a judge ruled that he was not legally sane, and he was placed in the care of his sister, Sarah Sheidley. Sarah refused to pay three of the notes when they came due, prompting a lawsuit from the board of education in 1894<ref name=":0" />. The board prevailed, primarily because Sheidley had established a reputation for generosity over the course of his life; giving to the public library was something that he would have done in sound mind.<ref>Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)</ref>

A committee of Alfred Gregory, the Rev. Henry Hopkins, the Rev. Cameron Mann, Miss Ethel Allen, Mrs. Silas Delap, Mrs. Laura Scammon, Miss Frances Logan, J. M. Greenwood, superintendent of schools, and Mrs. Carrie Westlake Whitney, the librarian, was appointed to select the books. By a partial expenditure of this money, the number of volumes was increased by 10,000. In selecting the books, the different classes were "rounded out", and art and reference books materially improved. Books for special departments, such as science, club work and manual training school work, were added. Lists were placed before the book committee by specialists for scientific subjects, and books in German, French, Spanish, Italian and Swedish were selected from lists prepared by those familiar with the languages to help ensure the best selection.<ref></ref>
