A seed or a wet piece of paper (the "bullet") is inserted in one end of the cylinder and the piston is pushed in rapidly at the other end. The name ''luthang'' is originally [[Visayan languages|Visayan]], meaning a small naval [[cannon]] (''[[lantaka]]'').
