Guglielmo Boccanegra was a Genoese nobleman who briefly ruled the Republic of Genoa as "Captain of the People" in 1257–1262. Boccanegra took power at the head of the popular Ghibelline faction amidst the discontent following a financial crisis and the defeats suffered against the Republic of Venice in the War of Saint Sabas. In 1260, he began construction of the Palazzo San Giorgio. In the following year, Boccanegra secured an important diplomatic victory with the Treaty of Nymphaeum with the Empire of Nicaea which after the Nicaean recovery of Constantinople led to the establishment of a Genoese trading colony at Galata. Despite this success, Boccanegra failed to silence the domestic opposition of the Guelph noble families, who deposed him in a bloody coup in May 1262. In exile, Boccanegra entered the service of the King of France, undertaking the fortification of Aigues-Mortes as its governor. He died there sometime in 1273.
