Bands of the Household Division (UK)
Lampshade Dog: /* References */
Music is an essential component of military ceremonial in the UK. Each of the five Foot Guards regiments has its own band and its own regimental quick and slow marches. These five bands include:

* [[Band of the Coldstream Guards]]
* [[Band of the Grenadier Guards]]
* [[Band of the Irish Guards]]
* [[Band of the Scots Guards]]
* [[Band of the Welsh Guards]]
These are on show in the [[Guard Mounting|Changing of the Guard]] ceremony at [[Buckingham Palace]]. Similarly, both the [[Household Cavalry]] regiments have their own mounted bands and also their own regimental quick and slow marches.<ref>https://ift.tt/3adERf3>
The Massed Bands and Mounted Band feature annually at [[Trooping the Colour#Massed bands troop|Trooping the Colour]]. The term "Massed Bands" denotes the amalgamated bands of all five Foot Guards regiments, and numbers around 250 musicians. The term "Massed Mounted Bands" denotes the amalgamated bands of the two [[Household Cavalry]] regiments. The mounted band wear colourful state dress (unchanged since 1685)<ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6VIWTVxtMU BBC Commentary to Trooping the Colour 2015], retrieved on Youtube (video time 1:01:04), 28 June 2015</ref> and dark blue peaked equestrian caps. They are led by two musicians on large [[Shire horse]]s used as drum horses. Since their hands are occupied with the drumsticks, they must work the horses' reins with their feet.

The first bandmaster to be commissioned was [[Daniel Godfrey (bandmaster)|Daniel Godfrey]] of the [[Grenadier Guards]], this being a personal award coming with a [[Queen Victoria Golden Jubilee Medal|Jubilee Medal]] as part of [[Queen Victoria]]'s [[Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria|Golden Jubilee Honours]] in 1887.<ref name="dnb"></ref> In the Foot Guards, personal commissions would later be granted to Lieutenant Colonel John Mackenzie Rogan and Captain Albert Williams. As a result, on 6 June 1914, the term "Director of Music" was introduced to distinguish those with a commissioned rank from warrant officers.
