"Percussion instrumental" is a mainly instrumental music genre, that arose out of various influences, roughly since 2013. It is as such a creation by Amsterdam (Netherlands) percussionist Michel Conci (b. Nw Vennep, Netherlands. 1974).

Conci is a reggae fan, writing vocal reggae songs, and even released some formally. Throughout, however, he also listened to a.o. Afro-Cuban and African music, that was often percussive. His own journeys to Cuba further influenced Conci toward percussion. Since 2012 he started learning various percussion instruments, starting with Afro-Cuban congas, bongos, followed by djembe, ashiko and talking drum, and various "small percussion".

Other influences are Dub Reggae, Yoruba ritual music, Congolese music, Mande music, funk, and bands like the Weather Report.

Conci decided to take African traditional, ritual music as basic percussive pattern, adding to this Afro-Cuban, Reggae, and other influences. Due to his Spanish maternal background, Flamenco music is another influence on Conci.

Conci argues that this way percussion is foregrounded, rather than sidelined, whereas other instruments like guitar or keys - dominant in other genres – serve the percussive rhythm, and not vice versa, as is common.

'''CHARACTERISTICS'''

Certain characteristics certainly recur, setting it apart from related (instrumental) genres.
-polyrythmic, with one driving (mostly bass) drum pattern, answered to by other rhythms, in the African call-and-response tradition. This is mostly clave-based

-all instruments used are as much as possible acoustic, except occasional digital drums.

-mostly various percussion instruments are used, with different sounds.

-most instruments used are percussion instruments.

-the duration of the songs is similar to those of common pop songs (around 3 or 4 minutes).

-melody lines come on most percussion instrumentals from various instruments (harmonica, guitar, kalimba). These however serve the general rhythmic structure.

-use of "fading in and out" of certain (counter) patterns, rather than continuous or walking lines. This is an influence from Dub Reggae, and from James Brown funk.

-rhythmic influences from various genres and rhythmic traditions – and different (African, and other) cultures - tend to be mixed.

Michel Conci has released/publicized many percussion instrumentals since 2013.
