The company was incorporated to provide materials for the growing demand for polymer products within the country. NNPC's market strategy to satisfy the local market as a local producer was planned in phases. The first phase included the manufacturing of polypropylene, carbon black and linear alkylbenzene at refineries while the second phase was the construction of the Eleme Petrochemical Company. Indorama Eleme is designed to use gas to manufacture olefins, polyethylene, butane and polypropylene for both local and foreign markets. Production commenced in 1996 under a management from NNPC.
In 2005, after a bidding controversy between Indorama and rival bidders Dangote/Transcorp, Indorama was approved as bid winner and was given the go ahead to purchase majority stake in the company while the government retained incurred liabilities,<ref></ref> workers were given a 2.5% equity interest in the firm and host communities shared a 7.5% equity interest. Under Indorama, the firm was able to generate profit within two years of commencing operations after a successful turn around maintenance project.
The company added a fertilizer plant in 2016 and a proposed methanol plant is under construction.
