Susanna Perini is a fashion designer and art collector based in Bali, Indonesia. She is known as the founder of fashion label BIASA and art institution BIASA ArtSpace. Her great contribution to the development of fashion and art in Indonesia merited her a Knighthood of the Order of Merit of the Republic by the Italian government in 2017.
Early Life and Education
Born in Rome, Italy, Susanna Perini learned the basics of couture from her mother who ran a small atelier under her own brand name. While she dreamed of becoming a film director, Perini majored in anthropology during her university years instead. She then took up photography and went to Bali, Indonesia, for the first time in 1987 to do a fashion shoot for Milan-based weekly magazine IO Donna.

The young Italian was very much inspired by the unique culture of the tropical island, from the various ceremonies to the details related to the customs and traditional clothing pieces. She decided to make Bali home and married American designer Paul Ropp there. After giving birth to two beautiful children, Nova Ropp and Sayang Ropp, they both went separate ways.
In 1994, Susanna Perini opened the first BIASA store in Seminyak, which was filled with mostly rice paddies at that time. Championing white light linen clothes in tropical casual chic, the brand immediately turned heads due to its name, which means "ordinary" in the local language. Along the years, the brand grew to become the leader of resort wear in Indonesia, with six stores in Bali and one store in Kemang, South Jakarta.
Art
Inspired by her dialogues with Indonesian artists, Susanna Perini delved into the art scene by opening BIASA ArtSpace in 2005. Less of a business venture, the art institution became a vessel for Perini to support budding artists throughout Indonesia to get recognition from art collectors in and from outside Indonesia.
"BIASA ArtSpace is not a gallery, in the sense that it is not a business. Perhaps, it's better to call it a foundation. During my travels in Java, especially in Yogyakarta and Bandung, I had dialogues with all these amazingly passionate artists that created layers of stories told through their visual artworks. Their dynamic energy and genuine enthusiasm in creating are so inspired, they compelled me to provide a space for them to tell their stories," said Perini to an interview with Hellobali magazine in 2011.
Aside from BIASA ArtSpace, Susanna Perini has also supported the works of contemporary multimedia artists such as Laurent Montaron, Keren Cytter and Enrique Ramirez.
